Do you HAVE to change the converter after a tranny goes "south"?

If you install a "new" tranny, due to the previous one going bad and keep the old converter, could the old converter contaminate the new tranny? Should I get a new converter since you can't really drain and flush the old one? Any suggestions appreciated. (My Pro-Built Stage 3 should be here tommorrow!!!!!!!!)

It depends on the particular situation. If I KNOW that the converter clutch (if so equiped) is good and that the failure did NOT involve metal or munge I MIGHT depending on how the converter checks out physically.

Get the idea I think you should just get a new one?

One more thing, if someone I dealt with wanted to do that they would be assuming ALL responsibility on the job.

Is there a certain way to check the converter for contamination? The tranny pan didn't look THAT bad. Is it impossible to flush the converter? Has anyone else ever re-used a converter from a prior tranny failure and had any problems?

the converter is a centrifugal trash collector. It spins the trash out of the fluid.

I'd replace it.

Well put Crosley. I have worked on converters that you can take apart and even then it is difficult to get it clean. Also, you cannot 'flush' a converter with a lock uo clutch inside and you also can't really check the condition of that clutch or the seal inside of it.

not worth taking a chance on a new tranny either..for a what if situation replace it and be done with it and any worries of any contamination. also dont forget to fill the new converter with fluid before installing it.and in getting a new converter you can also get one with a higher stall if desired.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm not rich (cuz I just ordered a new tranny) so I'm gonna go ahead and order a new converter from SLP. I can't afford any of the expensive ones that everybody seems to have, ie; Vigilante, Pro-Torque etc. What do you guys think of SLP converters? I'm also ordering the $15 panhard bar!

i have no opinion of converters from any manufacturer. as far as money goes, spend alittle more now, or alot later if tranny blows up due to bad converter. even a cheap new one is better than the risk of killin your new tranny. you can always upgrade later if you want. DO NOT FORGET TO FLUSH YOUR COOLER!!!

they sell cans of cleaner. you hook one side to one line and put the other line into a can or something and clean all the crap out of the cooler. you dont want to put contaminated fluid back into your new tranny.
other than that you should be good to go, just fill converter before installing it
