9 bolt cone clearance

My 9 bolt has no posi action left whatsoever, but my cones have not bottomed out fully. Was wondering if it's common for the axle to lose posi friction long before the cones bottom out? mine's not bottoming out on the case but one is closer than the other. I'll just replace them. just wanted to inquire.

Here's the guts

Have you disassembled it yet? Maybe the springs are broken or even missing (should be three). You never know you'll find in an old diff. If the cones still bite and the springs are good, it should work.

Re: 9 bolt cone clearance

If the springs are bad or something inside, I have a whole 9 bolt case, where the cones hit the carrier. I can get you what you need. It looks like the posi should work good.

When one cone is worn more than the other, it usually happens when you go around a turn and give it just enough gas to spin one tire and the posi not to kick in.

hey Bully, can ya explay why every 9 bolt carrier iv opened one of the cones is scored and the other is smooth? the scored cones are always on the same side BTW.

I am by no means an expert on 9 bolts, but I will give you my Theory.

When driving around town the main power wheel is the Passenger wheel when the posi isn't active, so I think when the posi kicks in, the power is shocked to the driver side wheel giving it more wear, as the passenger wheel is already spinning requiring the springs to shoot out the driver side cone harder to engage.

My posi doesn't work around turns and like 20% if I floor it going straight... But at the track, if I powerbreak to warm up the tires, then pull up to the line, the posi will work 100%... 9 bolts are just weird. I am going to snag a torsen 10 bolt when I get the chance. I like the bigger breaks too.

But then again, that is just my theory. Maybe someone will step in and correct me.

Re: 9 bolt cone clearance

I bought a spare carrier on ebay but will have to see what the condition is, not the 1st time I'd buy junk on the bay LOL.

i'll pull it apart and see what's amiss. Will let you know if I need any parts for it. Probably will.

Re: 9 bolt cone clearance

I know, the gears wear into each other, if you swap thema round it will make a noise, guaranteed. Same as you can't mix used pinions and ring gears. Thanks for the heads up I've done quite a few differentials but they were all Eatons, Early Iron Danas and C3 and C4 Dana 44s and a 36. A couple of 10 bolts but never a 9 bolt. Sure looks puny compared to the C4 Dana44 HD in my 82 LOL
