rearend swap

i searched and couldnt find the answer. i was just making sure before i traded a set of wheels and tires (paid 50 for them myself) if these two rearends would match. i have an 83 z28 with the 2.83 b/w rearend and im getting a posi rear out of a 84-86 not too sure. also the donor car is an auto and i have the b/w t-5 would the drive shaft fit too? i can have anything off of the car that i want for the wheels and tires should i grab any spare suspension parts while im at it?

thanks for the help

There is no 2.83 rear. I assume you mean 2.73. Straight swap to include the drive shaft with a T-5. Depending on gears, you may have to swap the trans drive and/or driven gears to make your speedo read correctly. If you have a drum rear and are swapping to discs, you'll need the proportioning valve and e-brake cables.

Re: rearend swap

ALL 82-02 rear ends (yes, 3rd & 4th gen) are direct swaps.

Only differences are the proportioning valve under the master cylinder, which SOME people swap too, some don't. If you have access to one for free? Sure. Swap it out too. And the lines on the anti-lock brakes from 4th gens. Best just to move your 3rd gen hard lines on the axle, over to the 4th gen ones, on the 4 circuit anti-lock systems.

4th gen axles are wider, but the 16" wheels still fit under the fenders. The early 15" wheels would set out a little farther, due to the less backspacing on them.

For the best brake performance, swap the proportioning valve. There are drum valves, there are disc valves. Not changing to the appropriate valve for your application is silly.

Let's stick to facts here, not opinion, because opinions are like *******s. Everybody has one.

FACTS are, as I already stated. SOME people swap them out, SOME people do not.

I even said that if you can already get a free one? Swap it out. But James ignored that part & just quoted what he wanted to. He's like that. Really likes to push my buttons. I think it is his goal in life!

Re: rearend swap

As I mention, for the best possible brake performance swap the valve to the appropriate one. Pretty simple.

Re: rearend swap

well the rearend i have has disk brakes and the one im getting has drums. i only plan on swapping the rears if i have to and something breaks. would it be a better idea just to swap out the guts of the rears in order to keep my rear disks?

Generally speaking setting up gears is not something for the novice.

Re: rearend swap

the novice part makes sense. i didnt ask if "i" should i asked if it should be done. but i have swapped gears in a dana 44 axle on my friends jeep and i have a few certified techs in my family that are easy to get a hold of. so is swapping them something i should look into?
