Car: 86 Firebird
Engine: 355 vortec heads
Transmission: 700r4 Huges 2500 stall
Axle/Gears: 4:10
4:10's and shift points

I have an 86 firebird. I'm running a 355 with flat top pistons, vortec heads, edelbrock performer rpm intake and my cam has a 282 adv duration. I have a 700r4 with a huges 2500 stall convertor and a posi with 4:10's in it. When I launch the car it will shift at around 3800 rpm and goes through the quarter in overdrive at about 5600 rpm. All other cars that I have owned including an
LS1 bird I had would always shift at about the redline. My question is shouldn't it be reving more on the low end before it shifts? Should I switch to higher gears to pull more rpm out 1st and 2nd? Also with my stall, it feels like the car is trying to pull against the brakes when I'm at a red light in town. Is my converter not stalling properly or would higher gears cure this problem as well?

Has the car shifted at 3800rpm since you got it or is this a result of you changing something?

Re: 4:10's and shift points

Pulling against the brakes while driving on the streets isn't good. First of all, I'd say your converter stall speed is too low for that camshaft. Something in the 3000-3500 range would work much better. Based on the rest of your car's combination of parts, your camshaft is too big.

If the transmission is only shifting by itself at 3800, something isn't set up correctly. I don't know the internal workings of the 700R4 but it's common to change the automatic shift points by adjusting the governor.

The 700R4 has a deep first gear and a wide range between first and second gear. Your 4.10 gears are about as deep as you want to go.

Stephen,

How much power are you making with your combo?

Never had it on a dyno but with just under 3100 pounds race weight and a 144 MPH trap speed, it works out to around 750 HP. Using a dyno correction factor, it's around 850 HP. I lose a lot because of altitude.

Re: 4:10's and shift points

as far as the shift points in drive, you can change them a bit with the tv cable adjustment. i forget whether it's in or out to change the shift point to a higher rpm, but you need a baseline first. to get that you press in on the D shaped metal plunger in the tv cable housing at the engine end of the cable and release it. then (engine off!) cycle the throttle from closed to wot once. you should hear a series of clicks as the cable finds it's sweet spot. take a drive (or hard run) and note the shift points. one or two clicks in the right direction after that can make a significant change in shift rpm and manners. don't go overboard with this though, these trannies are designed to work at certain pressures and fudging with that adjustment too far can damage your transmission!
700r4.com has the high tech way to do adjustments, and some nice brackets too.
this is the backyard way to do it, but it has been approved by my transmission guy. he specializes in 700r4's
i'd say if you're going more than 4 or 5 clicks in the right direction, you could be pushing it. i know i got mine shifting right at 5000 rpm at wot with 5 clicks (pretty sure it was making the nose of the adjuster longer. you'll see what i mean when you try it. just go 1 or 2 clicks at a time. by the way, this needs done any time the cable is removed from the bracket or the integrity of the cable length is changed. such as large idle adjustments, different brackets, etc.

Re: 4:10's and shift points

what are you running to correct the throttle valve geometry? I have a 4777 and the Bowtie Overdrives TVMadeEZ and that's the closest I've gotten to "stock manners" yet. Mine shifts a bit early WOT as well, but it still thinks its pushing those 2.73s instead of the 3.42s that are in there now. I've always wanted to upgrade to a corvette governor but I haven't gotten around to it.

Re: 4:10's and shift points

Hay guys I know it's been awhile since I posted here but I'm getting over surgery and have finally got to check some things out. Now my car came with a 305 4bbl. I replaced it with a 355 with vortec heads, performer rpm intake and holly carb. I had a hard time finding a bracket to work my throttle cable and had to buy one and mod it a little. While readjusting my kickdown cable I noticed that the car is not getting full throttle. When the gas pedal is to the floor, It only likes maybe a 1/4 of a inch or so in cable pull to pet it to wot. Could this be what is causing it to shift early or would it make any difference and How can I adjust the cable to get wot
