New motor, should I start with a new trans or diff?
the new motor should be in around spring(Parts in my sig) Im guessing @ 425-475hp+ at the flywheel. My trans is stock and my 10 bolt is 7 5/8" with 26 spline axles. Im going to be gentle as possible until I have money to replace parts, cause I know if I

to 1 or both. In your opinon which do you think will fail first the trans or diff? Im going to start researching options and cost for one or the other based on your replies. thanks guys

All depends on if you hook up. If you break traction (without hop), you should be fine with the rear you have. My vote goes to the tranny.

As long as the internals of the tranny are fundamentally strong, you can put a shift kit in it to up the line pressures and greatly increase your odds of it holding together. My vote goes to rear end failure.

i would do the trans first, since its easier to install it with the new engine rather than later once the engine is in. The he rear later, just dont beat on it right now and it will be fine

Re: New motor, should I start with a new trans or diff?
i would do tranny first... pro-built that 700r4 with upgraded internals, vette servo and transgo shift kit along with a tranny cooler and nice stall converter and you will have a smile on your face with that engine.... a built up 700r4 will make the car seem like its much stronger, quicker and solid with a more powerful engine.... the stock 700r4 feels sluggish and mushy and will most likely fail way before the rear does... i went through 3 junkyard 700r4s before i had mine pro-built to handle 500hp with a 2200 stall... feels like a different animal with that tranny now...
edit....
i noticed you have 2.73 gears.... i would just swap out those for some 3.42-3.73's and you will see a huge difference in take off and all around quickness..... those are highway gears you have and will hurt that new motor.....

and if your going to swap gear just get a rear from a 90 up i believe they have the 28 splines and 4th gens will come with 3.42s i believe most of them.and then it will make your rear quite a bit stronger and u can pick up a used fourth gen rear for like 400 bucks

I have a 26 spline now and the gear ratio is 3.42. Im thinking of getting a TA cover. Will it really strengthen up the rearend by itself?

yes it will... its about the only thing really you can do to add strength to the nine bolt... they make them for plenty other rear ends as well...here what they say about it also if you decide to get it, get the 20 dollar studs for alittle bit more strength..

he diff in my ta is is a 7 5/8" 10 bolt, I was thinking of welding tubes and going all out but Im scared Ill still break the pinon gear, at least if I add a ta cover I could always sell it if I go a different route

the main breaking point in the 7.5 rear is the ring and pinon. Personally, i would not put any money ion to the 10 bolt. It will survive a long time unless you beat it to death. But start saving or something better

Re: New motor, should I start with a new trans or diff?
do the trans first. i smoked mine and the 10 bolt hooked up great at the track and held together. however i did my rear and trans at the same time and i think with the way my trans shifts now id be scared of the 1-2 shift breaking it. get more wheel spin there than i do on launch.
