Tranny Went Out :( In need of some suggestions! (700r4)

So third gear goes out on my way back from the coast. I have it towed to my house and from there I take it to the local shop that has seen a lot of my car Please note that I had the transmission rebuilt 2 years ago and it only had 18k miles on it!! They say it looks like it was really abused but thats ridiculous cause I have always been a pretty cautious driver with my maro with some occasional fun driving I actually never liked the way it shifted cause when I stepped in the gas to make a pass or just to go fast if it dropped a gear it would redline and i would need to let off and then it would shift. It just didn't seem right... Well now my transmission is screwed and I may need a new one. The guy at the shop said he could order me a brand new crate tranny from GM for 1800 bucks (3 year/100,000 mile warranty) and would install it no-charge but I would have to pay for the transmission of course. I don't know if I should go that route or go through eBay and find a transmission more suitable to my need (if down the line I want to add power to my car). So any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated

I'd say for 1800 you could buy a used one that has no problems and have it built to handle more power, reliability, and fun.

I've wasted money on shops like that handling my tranny issues only because I was too afraid to delve into the workings and understanding of the 700r4. After about $2400 in mistakes and 3 "Shop" built transmissions I hit up monster transmissions bought $400 worth of heavy duty kit rebuild ****.... bought a 89 700r4 core for 50 bucks... snagged up a transgo shift kit for 100... and had my brothers transmission shop in Lincoln tech rebuild it for free..... top notch

I like how you say "I was too afraid to delve into the workings and understanding" like you actually ended up doing it yourself.
Anywho for what they're asking you could get a used 5 speed and just install that instead.

I have a similar story. My tranny went out, put in a transmission that I had sitting but super low miles. Well, that tranny just went up. So I bought this kit based on this, http://www.700r4l60e.com/store/produ...&cat=19&page=1
and I'm paying a guy, recommended by the service writer at the dealer I work at , $200 to rebuild it. Don't forget a new stall converter, you can get by with a replacement S-10 converter, but you should just get a nice new one while your in there. I highly recommend calling Dana at Pro-Built Automatics, he'll ask you tones of questions in order to customize the kit for your needs.

GM does not sell new transmissions. They sell remanufactured only. That means that the quality of the build will be stock gm parts, and labor that matched the technician doing the overhaul. Although GM typically does a good job, and has a great warranty, you can do much better for that amount of money, in my opinion.
Remember too that warranty's are subjective to the mood of the service manager on the day of the warranty claim. If they want to honor it, they will.
If not, they will create a reason to deny you.

i agree with everyone else.
take yours out and play with it. see if you can figure out why it broke. i mean its broke anyway right?
as long as you dont have parts left over, transmissions are pretty basic once you understand the basic theory of operation.

if that doesnt work for you, you are out maybe $100, but you can use the transmission as a core anyway.
