What is that plug on the 4th gen rear that has a tiny magnet inside and plugs into the car via a blue plug? The magnet/sensor side goes into a 1" approx. diameter hole in the top of the gear housing.

I wonder if that plugs into my third gen or if it was some new feature on the 4th gens. I haven't pulled the rear out of my 86 yet, so I don't know if it has that on it or not.

whats the the advantage of putting a 4th gen rear end in compared to a third gen rear with the same gears?

 

wider (for 4th gen wheels), disk brakes as opposed to drums. IIRC they're both 7.5" 10 bolts.

 

Posi and disk brakes, as well as running 4th gen or vette wheels.

 

Also 28 spline axles, which some third gens don't have. It's a bit stronger.

I had to machine my 4th Gen axles.. to 3rd Gen width. after I installed my Moser C clip eliminator.. to retain my 1LE brakes

 

A late 89 to 92 rear-disc car would have pretty much the same rear end as a 93-97: 7.6, 28-spline axles, an Auburn, and PBR calipers. So swapping either rear end into an 82-88 car with a 7.5 or 7.6, Gov-Loc and/or Auburn, with Delco-Moraine calipers would be an upgrade. The LS1 (98+) with its Zexel-Torsen and superior brakes would no doubt be the best choice for an 82-92 swap.

Internally. not much difference.

Externally? Almost 4" wider (2" per side). That can have a real effect on wheel fitment.

 

I assume that was a given.

16" rear offset wheels yes.

Front wheels offset will cause them to stick out, but only by about 1/4".

Stock 15" wheels will be out by almost another 1".

In the first pic, I'd say that car needs an adjustable Panhard Bar. I bet the other side is under the fender.

On your car, I'd ask what size tires you have, because I know a local Camaro with stock wheels, stock 245s & a LT1 rear, which is a bit wider than the LS1 rear, yet his seems to be "in" more than yours (blue car on the right, next to my white GTA).



Yes, my 315s on 11" wheels, on my stock 9-bolt rear axle fit better, but I also have an adjustable panhard bar. Stock, the crosslaces sat further out on the drivers said than the passenger side. Still under the fender, but not centered. I had to get an adjustable panhard bar to center it up good, before putting the 11"s & 315s on.

 

the green car was the same on both sides. they aren't factory wheels and had a slightly higher or lower offset.
My GTA wheels had the stock size 245/50/16 tires.

Define "correct offset". I still have the early 3rd gen aluminum drum spacers (thought I'd need them. i didn't, i just never bothered to pull them back out) so really, mine could go in another 4mm (about 1/4") under my 7"bs wheels.

Looks like your 315s fit under the fenders pretty good too.

 

I meant to say stock LS1 offset wheels on my LS1 rear, even though the wheels are 1/2" wider than stock SS and WS6 wheels.
They are 17x9.5 wheels with sumitomo 315's (for some reason Sumitomos are skinnier than other 315's)

I had my 9" widened to 11", then got the Sumitomo 315. I coulda just put the 315s on the 9" wheels & saved me the custom widening cost!

Oh well.....Next time I'll get "real" 315s & need the 11" wheels.
