700R4 shifts hard into D and Reverse from Park
Hello Guys I have a question about above..ok to try to give you all as much info I have the 700R4 mentioned above came from a junkyard..mine went out got one from the junkyard didnt work go another from them which is the one mentioned above. When im shifting from Park into D(overdrive D) and Reverse its a hard enough shift to shake the car. I set up the TV correctly it opens all the way on WOT...but it also has a way later shift points from my previous trans my first shift is about 4500 to 5000RPM and im going about 25-35 miles an hour the next shift is again about 4500RPM but bu this time im going about 45-55 almost 60miles an hour. My previous trans shifted at around 10-15 MPH (2500-3000RPM) then the next shift would have been at around 25-35MPH..etc.etcFluid is fine. My car is an 89 TBI 305 all stock no mods. This tranny came from a 91 Camaro. This is what i am told by the junkyard. Any ideas? im not sure if the tranny is bad or shift kit is on it or whatever...Thanks for your help.

Govenor is on side of trans, under tin cover. If I remember right the cover is press fit and needs to be removed carefully. You ll have to replace the o-ring on the cover and maybe apply RTV to seal it when youre done. Also, whats your idle speed. High idle will cause hard engagement to drive or reverse. Shift points are largely influenced by the TV adjustment. If theyre a bit too high just back the cable off a bit til its where you want it.

My idle speed is between 1500-1000RPM...yep im just not sure about the govenor because the stupid junkyard has this "consult us before making any repairs" and I dont trust them because they might say oh its bad bring it back and we will give you another and after taking the trans in and out twice I really dont want to do it again...i have until the 15th before my 30 day warranty is up...so im kind of stuck trying to figure out if its the trans or TV cable...or? How would I back off the TV Cable a bit? do I just push on the "D" looking button on the cable? I so do not like this junkyard but because they have GM cars and esp 3rd gens they take advantage of people here locally and charge way too much...but thats another story. Thanks for your input and help.

oh shoot no way how would I adjust the idle? The idle has been like that since I had the car a little over a year...IAC is bad? I am not sure how to adjust idle on computer controlled cars...I thought that was all done by the computer? Is there a way to adjust the idle?

There is a way to adjust the idle but I'm unsure how to do so on a TBI car. I've never done anything major on a TBI equipped vehicle. I'd check the TBI section of the forum and run a search on it. You can't be the first person who needed to adjust their idle on an LO3 (TBI 305) equipped Camaro.

there should be a screw on the front right side of the TB, it might have a cap covering the hole the screw is in. look on the front side where the throtle is.
you might need a carb adjusting screwdriver set to adjust it. mine is a square head screw.

TPI and the MFPI V6's use a Torx head screw. Not sure what TBI uses.

Re: 700R4 shifts hard into D and Reverse from Park
ok guys update on the trans situation..I think its shifting hard from maybe sitting at the junk yard...things might have stiffened up or are gunked up...right now my idle is a bit under 1000..im guessing about 800-900. Its also shifting closer to where it should be..its now shifting at about 2000RPM...it still shifts hard into Drive when shifting from Park to drive and you can also feel the shift into Neutral...so let me see how it goes in the next day or so. Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions.
Re: 700R4 shifts hard into D and Reverse from Park
Good that you got the idle down. Now to see what the year is on this unit. On the passenger side of the transmission just above the pan rail toward the back on the casting there is a flat spot about 3" long, and a 1/2" high. Wipe this down and look at the code. The first digit you see is the year. 6=1986, 8=1988, 0=1990, etc. Chnaces are that you have a 1986 or earlier, that is why the harsh neutral to drive engagement. 1987 and up units had a forward accumulator that absorbed the shock.

Hey Jesse, Im sorry for not paying more attention to this post. It seems like youve got some good input. Yes, you adjust the TV cable by pushing in on the "D" shaped button. The factory method is to simply press the button in so that the spring in the auto adjuster housing retracts the cable. Then, fully depress the throttle which should adjust the cable. However, in many cases we have to fine tune this adjustment by pressing in the button and pulling the cable out one or two more notches.
Youre right about idle speed being computer controlled. Your high idle probably is a bad IAC. It could also be unmetered air as in a vacuum leak. Try bringing the idle down to spec (about 550 hot) see if the IAC responds by managing idle speed.
