Hey guys,

Having an issue with my stock 88 IROC. When it's about 50 degrees or below, my trans takes a minute to go into gear after backing out of my driveway when switching from reverse to Drive or Overdrive. When its warm outside or I have driven it that day it seems fine. Any ideas on what could be causing the issue?

 

Your not alone... I gotta 91'Formula does the same thing. I changed the fluid and put in a new filter and the same issue persist only when she's cold. I just baby her, especially when she's cold cause I don't want to screw up the trani. I thought about adjusting the TV cable but if that was the issue it should happen all the time I would think. Anybody?????????

 

How many miles do you have?

125,000 miles and counting. The winter beast is back on the road and the Buick in the garage. HATE driving the Bird in the winter but have too much money and possibilities tied up for the Buick. I know> Have to get too work somehow......

 

Back on topic: Cold slip? If the trani was shot then it would slip all the time so what gives?

I checked the trans fluid on a level surface after it warmed up a bit. Was a half pint low, but I didn't drive it either, so I will check it after driving a little and post if there's any difference. Going to change the fluid in a few weeks too.

Everybody is scared of trani questions I suppose.... We get it, the trani doesn't shift properly ONLY when COLD into a SPECIFIC gear(not all of them). Is their a way to make this better before WE toast the Trani? In my case: New filter/fluid, Level checked properly, shifts fine warm. I'm 37 and don't BEAT ON MY BIRD like a young man. So what gives????????????

 

its hard to say over the board.. we need data, a trans gauge to see what your line pressure is... it can be worn seals that swell up enough when warm, worn or sticking valve body (even check ***** gummed up) vanes in the pump scorn or sticking its so many things idk.. try asking a trans guy because from what your asking I think you may want to ask a trans guy who knows from seen a "common" problem like this

So i have a 700r4 on my 90 and it does the same thing. But when i put it in 1st gear it goes right in...its really weird. Try that and let me know if it helps.

 

Thanks, but already tried to easily play the auto into a manual(Rumblin has first issues, I have 2nd issues might work for him). No workey for me.......... Welcome to the site

 

If I go right to first it seems to work fine. When I checked the fluid after driving about 15 miles its a little high, like a 1/2 pint. I am going to change the fluid and filter in a week or two and check the adjustment of the cable. Also might put in the Corvette servo too. I assume after 139,000 miles it just might be worn out.

 

Forgive my ignorance but what do you mean by a "servo" I have dropped and replaced a rear-wheel trani on my own (my old 73' Charger) but have no idea on the actual working components within/out of a trani . I'm A noob.........

 

The corvette servo fits in the side of the tranny and is supposed to improve the 2-3 shift.....most notably the lag time when under full throttle. Some vendors on here sell a kit or I think it can be bought from Summit for about $30.00. Well worth it in my opinion.

 

Just a heads up on the lag time between the 2-3 shift.......I took the car to the track a few weeks ago and adjusted the TV cable to lower the shift point. As we all know these cars make no power at RPM. The car was shifting at 5500when the lag occurred. I brought it down to 4800 and full throttle upshifts were perfect. Car eventually went 14.45 @94. Had to readjust 3 clicks when done as it shifted two quick when not under full throttle. Took about a minute to do. Just thought I'd relay the info.

 

Just a thought, but i'll throw it out there anyway.

If its cold, I would think that the trans would have to warm up to reach the proper fluid viscosity before it will shift into OD.

I bought my 89 RS 2.8/700r4 with 180,000 miles on it and now I'm pushing 214,000 miles and the entire time it has done it. No rebuild on motor or trans. I do get on it at times, and I will occasionally run flat out on the highway at 3 in the morning. and other then the 2-3 shift, I've had no problems with it(as far as I know, the 2-3 issue is common without the corvette servo?)

Keep an eye on your temp gauge and see if it does it at a specific engine temp(to see if it is a consistent thing, just as a reference; unless the OP has a tran temp gauge).

I would think we need more input from other members to confirm if this happens to just about all of the 700r4(I guess without a rebuild, shift kit, servo, etc...). Does the OP have a stock 700r with nothing done to it?

 

I haven't checked this in a while..... My bad. Great info but I got a 1st into 2nd problem an only when cold. 2-3 is helped by the vette servo and I'm concerned about adjusting my TV cable cause she shifts great once warmed up..... Is there a way to lube the TV plunger into the trani without removing it?? It's probably stock and gubbered up and sticks when cold?? I thought about viscosity as the other guy said but I have fresh Dex-merc trani fluid and new filter as per GM. Also the problem was persistent prior and after the filter/fluid change. Wasn't me I swear
