700R4 shifting question
okay here's my question.
We have an 87 GTA with a 700R4 tranny. It has started acting up. I still shifts gears but only under hard acceleration. If you drive normally it stays stuck in gear.
Any ideas or suggestions ??

Re: 700R4 shifting question
Check the tv cable for proper movement of the tv valve, and correct adjustment. If problem still exists, pop of the governor cover, and remove the governor for inspection.

Re: 700R4 shifting question
Yes. TV Cable.
It stands for throttle valve cable.
Your car has one, and it occasionally goes out of adjustment. Re-adjusting it as per the factory service manual my recommendation. This will cost you nothing, and may solve your problem.
As I mentioned earlier, the governor (responsible for shifting) may also be sticking, or have a stripped gear.
Resist the urge to throw shift kits and problem solver parts at a problem before checking it to be sure it is functioning as it should. If the root of your problem is in the trans, throwing parts at it usually costs money, and accomplishes nothing (or increases problems).

Re: 700R4 shifting question
i would like to know whats wrong with my transmission. i just bought a 1989 rs, and the guy who sold it to me said the trans is fine, but i need to let it warm up first for the trans to shift. and it sounds like the gears are slipping, anyways are these the symptoms of a transmission waiting to be replaced

I will try this tomorrow first to see where I stand.

Re: 700R4 shifting question
the junior shift kick i talk about is to fix a known problem in the earlier 700r4 that was later fixed. and all reman kits also come with this new throttle vavle for the vavle body. now i've never seen a tv cable come unadjusted by its self. its always by someone that doesnt know what they are doing. does your tranny shift at the same speed at half throttle as with full throttle? Try adjusting the tv cable but i think you may have to put the improved vavle in

I had to work late yesterday so I didn't get a chance to try and re-adjust the TV cable. I really don't think i should even try it....
What happens if I re-adjust the cable and it gets worse ?!?!?! Then my son is left without a car !

Re: 700R4 shifting question
I've NEVER adjusted the TV cable. The car just started doing the funky shifting thing all of a sudden...... I've only done 1/2 throttle. If I take off normally it stays stuck in 1st gear.

The adjustment procedure has been covered here, and other forums many times, so I am sure the search function will turn it up. It requires no tools, and takes more time to open the hood, than to adjust the cable.
Throwing parts (related to the tv system) will require adjustment of the cable anyway.
Why not take it to a pro? Their advice is usually free, and often more accurate than internet guessing. Even if it costs a few dollars for them to adjust it, or inspect, it should be worth it. I would hate to see you tear up a perfectly good trans, if you can avoid it.

Re: 700R4 shifting question
Sounds like the same issue I had with my 85, turned out the actual throttle valve was sticking. You might want to check that out.
