700r4 overdrive question

i have heard from many people that when peaking the top of third gear that the trans will go into overdrive and continue to accel all the way up to 4500rpm then the lockup is forced to happen and continue to accel from there to about 180ish. is this the true thing the trans will do in the senareo that you are basicly flooring it and holding it?
my car is an 87 GTA so there is no governer.

Re: 700r4 overdrive question

NO! The 700 will not shift into 4th at WOT. And will downshift at anything more then half throttle when stock. there are or were kit available to mod the tranny. I have the B&M sleeve that move the downshift to 3/4 throttle but it still will not upshift to 4th at WOT
also these cars stock don't have the power or rpm to get to 180 stock

Re: 700r4 overdrive question

Assuming no limiter, your top speed would be likely limited by your rear axle ratio and the engines ability to overcome air drag at high speeds. In third gear with a 3.27 rear and 27" tires you would be doing around 135mph at 5500 rpm.

With 245/50/16 tires it would be closer to 130mph at 5500rpm, 140mph if your motor can pull to 6000rpm in third.

Re: 700r4 overdrive question

Re: 700r4 overdrive question

my car has had previous owner work done to it upgraded heads, cam, intake and i know it at least has a hard hitting shift kit in it so how would i test for the upgraded sleeve or is there anything else that is popular to put into one of these trans. and if there is something extra there how would i find out about it?

Yes. The trans will not allow you to stay in overdrive at full throttle.

Some third gen 700R4's will go into and stay in 4th (OD). Most won't. Never have been able to figure out why or which ones would go into 4th.

There are several methods of correcting this, with the easiest being two set screws threaded into the TV sleeve.

Re: 700r4 overdrive question

so there is a chance that my trans had work done to it to make it stay bin fourth but is there any way to test that without going like over 140 mph cause i dont have a mile of open road just lying around to bust into that type of speed. so what rpm in fourth is about half throttle or where should it down shift at?

Re: 700r4 overdrive question

Three if the five iroc z28 that I have had could get full throttle 3-4 upshifts, the one of them that I have now I had to install the 3-4 upshift valve in the valvebody.the valve is like the kit that gm used to sale called the b4c upshift valve kit.

Re: 700r4 overdrive question

i know what needs to be done to get it to do it but how do i test if it has been done to it already. i do not wish to pull my valve body apart to find out if it has been done
