Not sure if or when i will change the gears in my car but would like to hear thoughts on the matter. Going to open it up this spring to drain fluid and fill with fresh while in there i will see what i have but if its still stock then it should have 3.08 the car is a 350tpi high flow runners not sure about cam header and 3 inch single exhaust (flowmaster) 700r4 trans open to hear suggestions but with information don't just spit out a gear ratio please explain why

Re: Gear suggestions?

Here's how you find out what gears you came with stock. Click on this link and scroll to the bottom. This page will give you allot of info on all the Camaros built in "87" = https://www.thirdgen.org/1987-chevy-camaro
Looks as if you have 3.27s ,if its still stock.

Re: Gear suggestions?

I just went from 2.73 to 3.42 and honestly, I do not notice much difference in the acceleration. I expected more. My .02

Re: Gear suggestions?

I expected an obvious acceleration difference, not something you have to 'feel' for. It's not any slower than it was before but it didn't turn into a rocket either. Swapping my TBI to an open element air cleaner did make an obvious difference and was about $500 less.

I guess if you go by your RPO and it says 3.08 then that's what it has. I have a '87 with a 3.27 gear in it when i got it. I rebuilt another 9 bolt with the 3.70 gear. With the 3.27 gear, i can burn 1st and half way in 2nd and cruise about 18-1900 rpm at 60 mph (however accurate the tach is). With the 3.70 gear, i can burn 1st and chirp 2nd, but the car shifts faster because it reaches peak torque faster, and i run about 21-2200 rpm at 60 mph. You will probably have a little less mpg because of a different gear ratio. Also you will have to change gears in the tranny for your speedometer or you will be 5-10 mph off.

Re: Gear suggestions?

the reason why my car is 3.08 if stock is because it was originally a 5.0 5 spd car and someone converted it to an auto and stuck a 350 in it

Well that would explain alot. With a 350, you will notice a difference in launch from the stop lights. What rear do you have, a 9 or 10 bolt. (count the bolts on the cover)

Re: Gear suggestions?

Car a daily driver? 2.73 - 3.23
Like spirited driving, but still need fuel economy? 3.42
Want to go like hell but need it to drive above 70? 3.73
***** to the wall drag car only? 4.11

Thats my recommendation. Actually, I would put it back to stock. But there you go.
