9" fill plug?

Any recommendations where to put a fill plug if you're going to add one to a 9" ford f-body housing (if it matters its a moser)?

Re: 9" fill plug?

I've been wondering about exactly that... it seems like most put it on the very top of the housing or the top of the back like that one, and that seems like it would put it in a place that would be difficult to fill through and doesn't give you an easy way to check level like you usually can with a fill plug.

yeah, filling is not very easy, unless you have a transfer pump. i suppose you could put it on the side of the housing, a bit above the axle tube. i supose that would work, and possible give you a little more room to work.

Re: 9" fill plug?

I was thinking about this some more last night... why do these things never have a drain plug either? How about a location for a drain plug/a good plug to use? I'm almost tempted to just drill and tap a hole in the bottom of the housing, file it flat and use a standard oil pan drain plug.

I'm doing exactly that with my Currie housing. I'll be attaching the magnet to it too so that you can remove the magnet without removing the center section. I think that's the best solution because you always want to clean the magnet if you're changing your fluid.

Here's where Strange puts the fill plug in their center sections:

Re: 9" fill plug?

That first picture is where I have the fill plug installed on my 9". I've also seen them mounted right on the top however my wishbone mount is on the top so I had no room. Even mounted on the top sides will work. You still use the factory fill port on the side of the case to measure the level.

As for a drain plug, drill and tap a 3/8" NPT hole in the bottom and install a pipe plug that uses a square drive or allen key to remove it.

Re: 9" fill plug?

no pic, but again, the moser 9 has a 3/8 npt pipe plug ont he bottom of the housing. I assume its threaded intot a boss thats welded inside the housing before install.

Re: 9" fill plug?

Mine is just threaded into the steel housing. It's thick enough to provide enough threads. It's not like the plug is holding something on or has any pressure behind it where it needs a lot of threads.
