9 bolt 3 series whining and loose

I have an 85 T/A, posi rear 9 bolt with 3 series carrier. It whines on accelleration / decelleration. I jacked up the rear and pulled the cover. With the car in park, I can turn the passenger wheel about 10 degrees before the opposite wheel gets engaged. I am new to the 9 bolts, but this sounds like there may be a spring inside that pushes the spider gears toward the center, between the outer cone and spider? If so, is my spring shot, the cone shot, the spider, or all of the above? The ring and pinion appear to be in correct tolerance. Old diff fluid had a metallic appearance so I assume something is wearing. Any help is appreciated.

A good photo of a dissasembled carrier or expanded view might help me too.

The cones are easy to check. http://www.9bolt.com/technical.html

I think I have some detailed info the 9bolt regarding rebuilding etc saved somewhere on my computer. I will try and find it to see if it is what you are looking for.

this is what I had saved on my computer

I had this problem with the whining my 9 bolt though becuase of crappy contact pattern on the gears. Much louder on acceleration/highway cruising 60+kph (30-35mph)

Re: 9 bolt 3 series whining and loose

I'll take a guess and say the diff needs to be rebuilt. That means new cones or machining the carrier halves and the cones plus shims to get things back to "new" condition. There are many threads on what needs to be done. Depends on your budget and mechanical skills how you go. Doesn't cost a bundle if you do all/most yourself. Especially if you know someone who can do the machining.

I just did this job on my 9-bolt and here is my thread with some pics: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...er-9-bolt.html

My oil was very metallic too, and it's from the cones wearing.

When I got my 9-bolt it came out of a car with 130k miles on it. Cones looked FANTASTIC. Oil looked like liquid mercury. It just happens I guess.

Depends on how it was driven. The one I did had 120k and was totally done for. The oil took a long time to all ooze out.

Re: 9 bolt 3 series whining and loose

You need to open it up to be positive but from what you describe the posi needs to be rebuilt for it to work at all. You don't HAVE to do anything other than get new or machined cones and shim the spider gears if needed. You can machine a little of the noses of the existing cones if they aren't completely worn away but if you get new cones and they don't have the nose recess you'll need to get the carrier halves machined. There are threads and pictures galore but first is to pull the diff and see what you're dealing with for sure.

If you've got a pin to pull it's not a 9 bolt.

Re: 9 bolt 3 series whining and loose

9-bolts have 9 bolts in the cover. They were last used in 89 model cars. (which is not to say that a 91 wouldn't have one, by now; only, it didn't come like that)

A rear with 10 bolts in the cover is a .... I'll let you do the math.

Re: 9 bolt 3 series whining and loose

This is actually great news for you!

10-bolt parts are MUCH cheaper and MUCH more common.
