4th gen rear ends
While at the JY today I came across a '94 & '96 z-28's. Both cars still had their complete disc brake rear ends and were stick shift cars. As I understand it these are the LS type and will bolt up to a '89. Is this true? And can anyone hazzard a guess as to what the gear ratio might be, as neither car had a tag or spid sticker remaining. Thanks for helping a newbie in these types of cars.

Re: 4th gen rear ends
Great info and thank you very much for the lead. It answered the fitment question. But since neither car still have the RPO's I was wondering what gear ratios might be more common to stick-shift cars. My real goal here is for the brake upgrade, but, info on the gears would be helpful to if possible.

Search will give you 99% of any questions you ever have. In this case, it was easy for me to find because I have posted it MANY times, so I could narrow the search down to just Posts by me to find it faster.

BlackenBird, I don't feel slammed at all. I was trying to take an easy out, I recently had surgery for 2 broken hips and didn't have my grandson/helper with me to crawl under the beasts.

That sucks. Hope they heal well.
Short of doing that rotating check or opening the diff cover & counting teeth, so is no 100% sure fire way to know. Rear ends are an easy thing to swap so there is no telling, for sure, if a stock rear end is still under a 3rd gen.

Things are getting better, I just don't get up or down real fast and twisting is out of the question. Thank you again for your assistance.

Re: 4th gen rear ends
if it's a manual i'm pretty sure all the z28s came with 3.42 gears. my fourth gen rearend is a 3.42 but i'm not sure what year it is from.
it bolts in fine except it is about 3.8 inches longer than a 3rd gen axle, so you'll need an adjustable panhard bar to center the gear housing.
you'll probably need help getting it though, the thing is HEAVY.

Re: 4th gen rear ends
Thanks for the info ol' Paddy, me boy. The cars are a '94 & '96, my grandson and his Dad are my arms, legs, and back for next little while. My IROC will be my grandson's someday so he doesn't complain, but, my son-in-law is a different story.

Re: 4th gen rear ends
My grandson & son-in-law went to the JY and got the R/E out of the '94 Z28 today, It has the rotors, PBR calipers, sway bar, and parking brake cables.
When turning the rotor one complete turn, the pinion spins approx. 3 1/4 turns (3:23's).
Did these R/E's come from the factory with backing plates or did someone remove them?
I tried to post a pic, will serch how to do that and post one.

Re: 4th gen rear ends
The sure fire way to tell the ratio on your rear end is looking for the stamping on the ring gear. It will tell you the number of pinion gear teeth to ring gear teeth. ALSO, there will be a stamping on the pinion as well.
BTW, I've only dealt with STOCK GM ring and pinions, so I don't know about aftermarket. I would assume they'd have the stampings as well, or its a crappy piece.
In this example, 11:41 >>> Thus 41/11 = 3.72727272 which is roughly 3.73s

Re: 4th gen rear ends
After taking a closer look at the '94 Z car RE I purchased I noticed it has an electrical connection on top of center section, does this mean it came with traction control or ABS?
We got all the brake lines from the chassis connection for rubber hose to the disc's. Will this hose thread into my third gen chassis connection? I found the answer to this previously but, couldn't find the second time I searched for it.
I, also understand that I will need the PV...correct or no?
And, lastly for this post is there anything from the front brakes that can be used on a third gen?, as they looked to be nearly new.
Happy New Years Everyone!!!, And Thanks.
