yo guys, i have 2 questions. 1 what's the best gears for my dd iroc-z that I also race a lot in? And 2 is the 305 tpi even worth dumping money into or would it be smarter to just go pick a decent 350 out of a junkyard n start from there?

assuming stock-ish 305? with auto? I would go no more than 3.42s. Seems to be best overall gear in just about any auto car. I DD'd my old L98 with 2.77, then 3.27, then 3.42's. All were great, but 3.42 ran fastest.

350 will be stronger mod for mod. 305 would be ok to mod if you went boosted like a home built turbo setup. Throw a few grand at it and have a stout car as long as its in good shape.

Or put a few grand in a 350 budget build. Still make good power. Its up to you

 

What kind of racing? Auto-x, drag, road?

n yea its a auto, pretty much stock 305, just headers n flowmasters. but i don't plan on boosting, so I was thinkin about a nice budget 350 since my goals for now are only around 320 hp. n I mainly race on the road like 1/4 to 1/2 races

 

320 on motor is close to 260-270 at the tires thru an automatic. A big cammed 305 MAY get there. I'd be curious to try that myself but I never see 305 build hp numbers here or even 1/4 mile times.

350 will do 320 hp very easily. If you want that at the tires, then 350 definately can do it but it needs more work. Heads/cam would be easier but may get there with stock heads and decent cam with an intake like a stealth ram if fuel injected. So many ways to do that. Good luck with it.

I've got a few 454's if you really wanna go fast lol... I use 3:42's in my car and they are a great "all around" gear...
