Axle Swap
Hi guys,
I'm looking to get rid of the rear drums in my 92 RS and upgrade to discs on all fours. I have a rear axle from an 88 Iroc with disc brakes. I understand that the gearings in the rear ends are different to handle the different motors, can anyone tell me if the axle's can be swapped between the RS and Iroc rear ends? I'm looking to just take the axles off my 92 rear end and put the axles in from the 88 iroc.

Re: Axle Swap
My bad. It appears from another link that you wish to swap rear ends, not axles.

Re: Axle Swap
While it would be simpler to just swap the rear ends, I'm not looking to change the gearing that I already have, I simply want to put in the axles that are already equipped with disc brakes and was wondering if this could simply be done or if the axles are not as simply interchangeable as I thought.

Re: Axle Swap
Both sets of axles should be 28-spline axles so sure. But IIRC, left & right axles are not identical length so if so.....Left fits left & right fits right.
But in one part your asking about the axle & another your asking about brakes. 2 different subjects.

Re: Axle Swap
aren't 1988 axles 26 spline?plus the 1988 is the rear with the small rotors and the troublesome calipers as i understand it.

Re: Axle Swap
The 92 will have 28 spline axles. The 88 will have 26 splines. As long as the 88 is a 10 bolt and not a 9 bolt then parts can be swap around.
You can use the 10 bolt 88 housing with disk brakes and install the gears, carrier(posi) and axles from the 92 into it.
If the 88 is a 9 bolt, you can just swap it over into the 92 but gear choices are very limited and hard to find. Parts from a 9 bolt and 10 bolt are not interchangeable.

Re: Axle Swap
But you need to get clear about your going for. You have 2 different threads going on about it & neither makes sense. Axles (the little spinning rods from the middle out to the end) or brakes. Axles will not make a flip bit of difference to the brakes. Brakes bolt to the housing.
Start over & tell us what your going for. Trying to help, but your confusing.

Re: Axle Swap
Alright starting over.
I have a 92 RS with drums in the rear. I want to get rid of the drums and replace them with discs. I think the confusion for me is that I don't know how the drums are attached, but from what I've read, there would be some fabrication involved in mounting the new disc brakes which I was hoping to avoid. I think if someone could clarify the difference between disc and drum brakes and how they are mounted that would greatly help me in explaining what I want to do. I'm sorry for the confusion

Re: Axle Swap
the 88 iroc which i have a 10 bolt rear had the junk brakes and guess what have fun with it... you should of grabbed a rear out of a 89 or 90 or 91 with the pbr the 88 stock disc rear brakes suck big you know what !!!!
besides while your there replace the lcas and shocks springs etc if you want to do the damn pump too and drop your tank. fyi the stock lcas are horrible stamped steel and nine times out of ten the bolts are stuck to the bushing start cutting my friend!

Or you could eliminate the need for modification by using one of Ed Miller's 'no hassle' kits, such as the one below:
