700r4 transmision or torque converter problem

Hey guys, hopefully I can get some help I have a 91 camaro, I recently put in another 700r4 thinking that my old one had burned the 3rd and 4th gears. The car would only shift from 1st to 2nd at like about 3500rpm's. Then after that it just doesn't go into 3rd and 4th just revs up and does not grab gears will grab 2nd gear once the car slows down. Now 2nd tranny and same problem the governor is good pulled it out and inspect it, fine. The only thing the other transmision and this one I just put in is the torque converter. Could the torque converter be messed up and causing this problem. i had also forgot to mention that i had done a tune on the car, that wouldnt affect in any way, just throwing this in for additional info.

Re: 700r4 transmision or torque converter problem

This was my exact problem which is why I'm in the middle of a tranny and converter swap now.I'd like some answers myself, this one has had me stumped for quite a while.

Although this did give me an excuse to buy a 700r4 street/strip and 3000 stall converter, seeing as I just did an engine swap a few months back it would have saved time to find out the tranny issues then.

Yeah it would of huh, so Seven_MPG you got your transmission in on the car already. If so did it fix the problem, plus i'm in the market for a new tranny and stall any recommendations on where to get one, I seen mad dog transmissions and gmen transmission also any thoughts on these guys. What would you recommend from a trusted manufacture these guys seem pretty good. I just want a good street/strip that will do the job along with good upgrades lol.

I am sure there are more then one good place to buy a transmission, but I only know one https://www.700r4l60e.com/store/home.php same for the converter http://www.edgeracingconverters.com/

If you stumble across PATC and/or their other/related names, beware https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...level-3-a.html

Re: 700r4 transmision or torque converter problem

My transmission was built by Speed Unlimited in Maryland and I got the converter from them as well.I already had the B&M flywheel laying around for some years just waiting to be used.

To answer the question the trans is on the jack under the car.I worked on it some today but will finish installing it tomorrow.I'll get it in and bolted up tomorrow but then I'll have to finish all the little stuff like the torque arm and putting my headers back on,stuff like that. I'll let you know how it goes when I finally get a test drive.

Also did you make sure the converter was fully engaged on the trans? Don't know if that would cause the problem we had or not.

Re: 700r4 transmision or torque converter problem

When you put the transmission in let me know if that fixes the problem. I installed the torque converter how they told me. I went to a local tranny shop and they said since I swapped the tranny you have to make sure the converter has the right length to the input shaft. But for sure let me know how yours turns out

Re: 700r4 transmision or torque converter problem

Finished mine up yesterday, got it topped off with fluid and me and the lady went out to eat.On the way there it shifted through 1st to 2nd and 2nd to third but I had no fourth gear.Weird right? Well we ate then got back in and I drove to sheets to get some beer.I accelerated off the light and it shifted all the way through into fourth.WTF? No fourth at first but now it's there.Head scratcher.

Re: 700r4 transmision or torque converter problem

you know what im guessing maybe it being a stuck valve might of had some sort of debri in it and that acceleration helped it get that valve unstuck, well good luck with that transmission. im hoping to get my car with a fully built transmission back from the shop lol.
