VSS Speedo "Driven Gears" in an 89????
My car is an '89 RS, and I bought the one-piece plastic driven gear to correct my speedo. When I popped out the existing driven gear, I was surprised to see this:

I did not think VSS started until '90. Why does my '89 have this setup, and not the one-piece plastic gear that other cable-driven speedo's got?
Also, is there a correct way to remove the metal shaft, or insert the shaft onto a new gear? I tried pulling, and you can see that I broke a piece off the back of the gear. When I get my new gear, do I just press the metal shaft in with my hands?

Metal shaft, plastic gear setups like yours go back decades.
There's some interchange of the 700-R4 driven gears with other GM model transmissions too.
Use of the gear only as attache to a VSS was 86-up in Birds, 90-92 in Camaros. Trucks went to reluctor wheel / magnetic pickup VSS around 89.
The inner part of the gear has a thin plastic sleeve with a retaining rib that fits at the bottom end of the half-moon part of the shaft. If you use a pick to hold it up, the shaft can sometimes be successfully removed without bearing the gear.

Re: When Did VSS Speedo "Driven Gears" Start Appearing?
PLEASE HELP ME!
I'm sick of throwing money at the wrong parts. What do I need???
Started with a 2.73 rear, swapped to a 3.42 rear.
When I pulled out my old driven gear, it looked like this:

I broke it when I removed it, so I ordered another. You can see that the new gear does not fit on the shaft:

So I bought a the older, non-vss gear that I thought should be in the car to begin with. It will not even fit in the housing:

WHAT DO I NEED??? I realize I have alot of different colors/tooth counts going here, and at this point just want to be able to drive the car. I'm sick of buying the wrong parts. Do I need a different gear housing to use the black gear above?

The grey 44 tooth is part number 25513051
In this pic, the original red is on the lsft, beside the new red and grey. You can see that the old red had something on the back to hold the metal shaft on. I'm guessing the gear is not supposed to come off?

the 40-45 use a different vss. Standard motors sc13 I'm thinking would work. but I think it would have a 4k output so a dakota digital sgi-5 would need to be used with maf tpi.
