Mine does the same thing. problem is that the flywheel isnt stopping like its supposed too. but i found this to be a very good thing to do:
before you put it in reverese put it into 5th gear but dont let go clutch and then to reverse, it wont grind anymore. because it stops the wheel. glad i can relate to someone else.

drop the tranny, and get to the flywheel and replace. just replace the whole clutch, and whilke getting a new clutch might as well save the extra 100+ to get a very good clutch.

Mostly because, it's not "broken". (yet...) That's just THE WAY IT IS. This model of trans doesn't have a synchronizer on reverse, so you just gotta learn how to drive it.
The grinding noise is the teeth of the reverse gear chewing metal off of themselves. Just jamming it into reverse while it grinds like that, fille the fluid up with metal chips, and ruins EVERYTHING ELSE in the transmission. Even though it's not tremendously harmful to reverse itself, as there's PLENTY of metal there, it DESTROYS the whole gearbox; the bearings, shafts, other gears, etc.
Whenever I'm buying a used transmission, that's one of the first things I look for, is that damage; and I won't even buy one that has it, because all the parts will have damage and wear from the metal chips.
Replacing the clutch won't change that in the slightest.
Learn to drive the car right.

Re: why does it grind when i put it in reverse?
I'm new in thirdgen.org and not sure if people will reply to old threads. Anyways, I just got a 1992 RS a few months ago. It's my 2nd third gen. My car does the same thing. Before going into reverse I have to quickly pop it into fifth and them back into reverse. I also have to do the same thing going into first. Except, I go into second and then back into first. What's the most cost-effective way to get this fixed?

You 1st gear synchro is worn out. What you are doing now is the free solution. The only way to fix this one is to remove and rebuild the transmission.

Damnit. Alright, I guess I'll just use it like this for now. Rebuilding the transmission sounds expensive.
Thanks for the help!

accurate clutch adjustment is a must. you should be able to go from 1st to reverse, with no grinding. its a good test of the clutch adjustment. also change the gear oil in the trans ,it will help

Only way to know exactly what it will need is to have it cracked open
Doesnt necessarily mean youll need all new stuff.

both my t5s do. one in my dd v6 4th gen and the other in my weekender 350 third gen. just the way of the game with these clunky transmissions.
