A few missing and loose screws

Before I ask, I read over the "sticky's" and I may of missed it.
Picked up a lot of good info though.

I have an '89 Camaro that came with a "E" coded 5.0 with a 5 speed.
My first manual 3rd gen. (I will not own a v6 3rd gen, personal choice)
Anyway, long story short, I am putting a 5.0 out of a
'92 Firebird back into the camaro.

Someone had put in a 383, that was siezed up (due to stupidity)
it was a 1974 block with a 2 piece main/crank.

I have a new flywheel and clutch, and no bolts to attach them to anything!!

Does anyone know the size/thread and hardness of the bolts that hold a manual transmission flywheel to the crank as well as the clutch to the flywheel?

If anyone has part numbers, that would be a start.
My employment hours do not allow me to go to the dealer and bother the parts counter.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: A few missing and loose screws

The size of the bolts that hold the flywheel to the crank, is "flywheel bolts".

The size of the bolts that hold the clutch to the flywheel, is "clutch bolts".

Both are special, SPECIFIC PURPOSE parts, NOT generic hardware of ANY kind. Not "grade 8", not ANYTHING except.... flywheel bolts and clutch bolts.

Don't bother with the GM store, that's just crazy talk. They prolly don't have em, and if they do, they'll (a) be "special order" and (b) cost as much for ONE as the WHOLE SET will cost if you get it from THE RIGHT place instead.

You'll prolly find em hanging on cards at AZ. FOR SURE, they'll be at your local speed shop; as well as Summit, Jeg's, and the like (24 hr shopping, next day delivery if you want it). Mr Gasket is a reliable source for em available EVERYWHERE.

Re: A few missing and loose screws

ARP has a very nice set and prolly overkill for what you need but worth the money..

Re: A few missing and loose screws

OK, i finally got to go to the dealer.

Of course they are no longer offered, but information was found.

Flywheel Bolts are as follows:
LHO and MB1........: M10x1x23
L03 and M39....... : 7/16-20 x 31/32
LB9, M39 and MK6 : 7/16-20 x 31/32
L98.................... : 7/16-20 x 45/64

Yes you are correct ARP has them, correct size

Now the clutch is a different issue.
The pressure plate's bolts are listed as:
M8 x 1.25 x 21.6, 19.8 THD, 10.9, PC

Yet summit has a 3/8 bolt listed??????

Re: A few missing and loose screws

3/8-16 is correct.

They do need to be specific pressure plate bolts, as the grade and under-head diameter need to be correct to the use and pressure plate holes respectively.

Re: A few missing and loose screws

Did you visit your local speed shop and look at the Mr G ones? Or even AZ?

Were you warned about not bothering with GM?

There are certain things that GM is the ONLY place to go; others that there are options, but GM is still the absolute best place; others still that what they have will "do", but you can do better elsewhere; and a majority (for these cars, being antiques) for which they are utterly WORTHLESS. Functional things that aren't emissions-related, like bolts, are in that last category.

If this is a V8, ALL the ENGINE hardware is SAE; no metric at all. As jmd said, 3/8"-16 is correct. However they aren't just ANY 3/8"-16 bolts; they have a short thread section, and a long (relatively) shank behind that, that makes a sort of "dowel pin" type of arrangement to POSITIVELY locate the clutch on the flywheel. Without that, the clutch can be SUBSTANTIALLY off-center. DO NOT attempt to substitute for these bolts, at least not if you have come to enjoy having feet! Consider carefully that the clutch is only about 4" from your gas pedal, and DIRECTLY IN LINE with it: if anything fails and parts fly out, YOU WILL LOSE AT LEAST YOUR RIGHT ONE.

Get the RIGHT part.

Yup; T-5 ones are the same way, just shorter.

Re: A few missing and loose screws

I was just using GM for reference.

I will buy some bolt kits from "someone", I will not try to use "normal" bolts.
Without the shank size and centering or non centering to the I.D. of the bolt hole information, it would be not wise of me not to buy a bolt kit.

At this point, I was just wondering 'bout the difference between what jegs and summit has listed and the dealership has listed.

and yes, T5.
T56 is too costly to upgrade to, especially for a stockish 305.

Re: A few missing and loose screws

the difference between what jegs and summit has listed and the dealership has listed
'bout $50 the set, and multiple week wait time vs hanging on cards at the speed shop.... not much else

GM says m8 x 1.25

Re: A few missing and loose screws

I don't recommend the mr. gasket flywheel bolts. I tried to use them on my 88 L03 and 2 of the bolts stretched. Got them at my local advanced auto. Not sure if going to Fastenal and getting bolts will ease my fear of loosing my feet. so instead of ordering OE bolts when I first went there, now I have to wait until Monday when they're supposed to come in. Stupid advanced morons.

Re: A few missing and loose screws

Fastenal is full of imported crap. The speed shop recommendation is a solid one. So is ARP. So is your future use of a torque wrench
