700R4 will not shift from 2-3 in WOT. Any Ideas?
A few years ago I went to my local transmission shop to have my tranny rebuilt. With the anticipation of a new engine I told the shop I wanted a built tranny. They said no problem and the work was done. The shop used heady duty parts, Corvette servo, and a 2k stall (Way to small). Last year I finally installed my new engine. Its a minirammed 355 that put down about 397hp, and 350 tq to the wheels. I brought the car back to the trans shop to have them adjust the shift points to 6k.
Now heres the problem. At WOT from 1st to 2nd the car shifts fine. It goes all the way to 6k and then shifts. From going from 2nd to 3rd, when the rpm's gets to about 6k, instead of shifting to the next gear, it kicks down, or sometimes stays in that gear. In order for it to shift I need to let off the throttle. Then, if I put my foot back into it to WOT, it will kick back down. This happened on the dyno too. To get my dyno pull, it could not be in WOT. This also happens when Im on the freeway and gun it. I once again need to let off for it to shift or it will kick back down.
I have brought the car back to the transmission shop about three times. I explained the problem to them and they said it was the governor. Each time I have brought them they car, adjustments were made but this problem has remained exactly the same.
This is very miserable for me. I cannot use my car to its potential and I am afraid I may damage the engine. The rpms usually hit 7k when it kicks down. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
p.s. The TV cable has been adjusted more times than I can count.

Try adding trans fluid. I added ~ 1/2 a quart (beyond what the dipstick indicated to be full), solved the problem, makes the 2-3 shift at about 6500 under WOT. This was done on advice from Dana @ Pro Built.

I guess I can try that. I just cycled through all the gears and checked the fluid while the car was running. It was right at the full mark. Could there be potential harm done to the transmission if there is too much fluid?

What ever happened with this shift issue?
Just wondering because I have been on the internet for a while looking for an answer to my 2-3 WOT no shift issue. My TV cable is set correctly, part throttle shifting is nice, 1-2 WOT shift happens as soon as I move the shifter(6000 rpms) but I can shift into 3rd at 6k and nothing happens until 7k or so.

Still working on it. I found a new shop to go to and we have been making progress. I got a 3600 stall and asked him to look over the transmission.
Since the car was really sluggish around town. We installed a new valve body and the car feels 100 times better. It was shifting to early so the car always felt like it was bogging. Its much more enjoyable to drive now.
As for the WOT, its still there. I finally managed to have him drive in the car with me for him to experience it issue first hand. He said it appears to be the governor. He said it seems like the fluid is not being held when its supposed to. I dont know much about transmissions so a lot of the information was over my head.
As of now we are going to order a new governor and some other parts necessary. As soon as their in, I will bring the car back to him.

Any news? I'm ready to go back into my transmission and was just wondering what you had found to be your shift problem.

I am having a issue with my Trans. not shifting at W.O.T. I just changed the differential from 2:73 to 3:73. I see that Summit Racing has a gov. recalibration kit. Has anybody used this kit,or if you don't think this is my problem, please let me know. It's a 700r4 with a shift kit.
