Won't shift from 2nd to 3rd
Won't shift from 2nd to 3rd
I'm hoping someone here can help me. I have a 93 Camaro V6 that had a freeze plug go out on the back of the block so I had to drop the transmission. Now that it is all back together the car will not shift out of 2nd gear. 1st, 2nd and reverse are fine but it just won't shift regardless of how high the RPM's go. Prior to all this everything worked fine. I tried checking for codes but when I plug in the OBD I reader in the radiator fan turns on and no codes are displayed. Any help please. TIA

93? is it a 700r4 or a 4l60E?
If its a 700r4, is the TV cable connected properly?

But even jammed up, wouldn't it shift at a really high rpm?

Since no one seemed to have an answer for me I did some more searching and found this interesting article. Hope it helps anyone else with a similar problem.

The GM 700R4 is the transmission swap of choice for a lot of rodders. The high performance transmission can be flawless, with the help of a transmission shift kit. You aren't shifting for yourself anymore: The discerning rodder has equipped himself with a real 4-speed overdrive automatic. This isn't a slushbox either, it's the true hi-po GM 700R4 factory unit, supplied in Vettes, Camaros, Caprice police cars and lots of trucks. Swap kits are available in magazines and on the web for retrofitting a GM 700R4 into all sorts of cars and trucks. There's only one problem...
As with any good thing, though, the 700R4 has a flaw.
Introduced in 1982, the GM 700R4 electronic 4-speed automatic was a quantum leap forward for factory transmission performance. Originally used by the factory in a variety of GM vehicles, of late it has become a popular transmission to retrofit into non-stock applications. As with any good thing, though, the 700R4 has a flaw. The throttle valve in the valve body has a tendency to hang up, causing the trans to hold or get stuck in low gears. This defect is unique to the 700R4, but trans-upgrade kits are available that improve shifting performance and eliminate the throttle-valve hang-up problem.

Hey hammer, I don't have any suggestions for you but a problem of my own that may be related. I have a 700r4 in an 84 camaro. The car has other problems right now so I dont drive it far but need to assess the trans because it may be the most expensive repair to make it road worthy. Mine is good in rev. and first and second but it doesnt seem to shift beyond second except to sort of freewheel after that like its not engaged. Its been a couple weeks since I drove it but don't recall any motions to indicate that it shifted out of second at all. What did you find out with yours and how easy is it to un-stick these if that were to be my problem?
Re: Won't shift from 2nd to 3rd
I had to take it to a shop to get it fixed. The guy charged me $0.00 Way cool.
I’ll do my best to explain what my problem was.
Attached below is a picture of the TV valve assembly similar to my car but not exact.
The TV plunger (Red arrow) is moved by the TV Cable and is pushed inward inside the TV bushing (Blue arrow), it pushes on the TV spring (Green arrow) which in turn pushes on the TV valve (Yellow arrow). The picture shows the TV valve as a solid piece but mine is actually two pieces. I wasn’t aware of this so when I took mine apart it looked just like the picture. However, the second part had got pushed all the way inside and was stuck causing the valve to be in WOT at all times. He simply popped it out, put a tiny spring in behind it then replaced the complete TV valve assembly. The tiny spring prevents the end piece from getting stuck again.
Easy fix as long as you know about the 2 piece TV valve!
Hope this helps.
