305 clutch vs 350 clutch, difference?

I bought a complete T5 swap from a '91 Camaro with a 350 for my automatic(700r4) '92 Firebird with a 305. I have everything pretty much done on the swap until I realized the flywheel bolt pattern was different. So I had to order a new flywheel for my 305.

Now my question is, will the clutch bolt up with what I have or do I have to buy a new clutch as well?

It will all bolt up.

The flywheel you need is the one for 83-85 Camaro/Firebird V8. No other years, no other car model; no used ones either. Just go to the parts store and order one.

Re: 305 clutch vs 350 clutch, difference?

Wouldn't he need a 86-92 flywheel?

Going by the initial post it seems the Camaro he got the T5 from had a 350 in it which was probably a 2 piece RMS block since it clearly was a swap from its original 305. If the 305 is original to the 92 firebird than he needs a 1 piece RMS flywheel.

He said the '92 bolt pattern didn't line up, so either his engine is not original or the flywheel from the '92 wasn't original.

Probably 100% spot on, but it might be better for the OP to post a picture of the crank in his current car so we may know exactly what he has.

Re: 305 clutch vs 350 clutch, difference?

I had to take it down off the lift last night and I'm not gonna be able to work on it today or get a photo because I have to work tonight. But all the info I have is, I bought the entire setup from a guy who had a 1991 Camaro with a 350 motor. My car is a 1992 Firebird with the original 305, and the flywheel I bought from the dude doesn't line up with my car. I ordered this flywheel from the parts store: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...5709_233476_0_

And I'm wondering if the clutch he gave me will work for it.

You should be good to go with that flywheel and the clutch you got from the guy.

Awesome!

It sucks though because the flywheel he gave me is practically brand new. Anyone who needs a new flywheel for a 350 I'll sell it pretty cheap.

Was the problem that the crank was bigger than the hole in the flywheel or the flywheel was bigger than the stub on the crank?

Re: 305 clutch vs 350 clutch, difference?

Your initial description of the swap was confusing. Sounded like you had an older 350 in the car and your 92 flywheel wouldn't bolt to it. I'm still not completely sure that either you or any of us out here are completely sure of what you actually have.

If you have a 85-back motor, but the flywheel you have has a too small hole to fit the crank, buy the flywheel I described.

If you have a 86-up motor but the flywheel you have has a too large hole for the crank, buy the flywheel that would have come in your car if it had come with a T-5.

Re: 305 clutch vs 350 clutch, difference?

My car is a 1992 Pontiac Firebird with the original 305.

The T5 and parts I bought came from a guy who had it bolted up to his 1991 Camaro with a 350.

When I went to put the flywheel on it wouldn't fit on my 305.

So I ordered a flywheel for my 1992 Pontiac Firebird 305 from the parts store. This one: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...5709_233476_0_

So I was asking if the clutch he gave me will work with my 305 and everything I have now since the clutch came from a 350.

Clear it up?

The 305 and 350 is the same.

Why wouldn't the flywheel fit? was the bolt circle larger than the crank?

Re: 305 clutch vs 350 clutch, difference?

I think we are beating a dead horse here and I'm probably going to repeat my first post and what others said.

As mentioned above the 305 and 350 flywheels are the same. The differences are in the years. 85 and older 305 and 350s have a 2 piece rear main seal. This requires a neural balance flywheel. In 86 both the 305 an 350 went to a single piece rear main seal. This requires a flywheel with a counter weight in it. When you get the new flywheel look on the back side and you should see a weight molded into the casting of the flywheel. This is correct for your 92 firebird with the factory 305.

The 91 camaro you mention having the T5 and 350. Well the problem here is the 350 was never offered with a 5 speed in any 3rd gen. So that means that at some point in its life that 91 camaro had a 350 swapped in. the problem you ran into with the flywheel is not a 350 or 305 issue, it is a year issue. Most likely the 350 that was swapped into the 91 camaro was an 85 or older 2 piece rear main seal motor that uses the neutral balance flywheel. Since your 305 is the newer design it needs the different style flywheel you are getting.

As far as the clutch goes there will be no problem there. No matter what flywheel you have the clutch is the same.

The reason they are asking exactly how the flywheel didn't fit you car would basically verify my explanation above.

I hope that helps clear things up a bit!

Thanks for clearing that up Kevin! Makes total sense, I am off work tomorrow and will be finishing up everything!

Based on his lack of answering a simple question, I'm beginning to think he's not actually working on this but that maybe he dropped the parts off at a shop or something to have the work done for him.
