6L80 Trans TPI conversion...

Ok...so I've done the 6L80/90 swap in my Trailblazers and helped a few others and the LS-engine thing is a bit been-there-done-that. Now I'm looking for a swap that has some hair on it's chest...and wouldn't hurt if there was some demand for it....so I'm thinking....hmmmm...what about a nice low revving, torque motor in a lightweight sexy, great handling car....and cheap to boot. So I find myself missing my old 350 TPI Formula and T/A. Best part is mildly modified 305's and 350's should easily get into 12's from the swap alone. What do you guys think?

I don't see how putting in a 6 speed auto in a TPI car is going to magically make it a 12 sec car...

Although I will subscribe because I would love to put a 6 speed auto with an LsX in one of these cars...

I wouldn't bother, given the potential of the LS engines. TPI is great for "feels good" torque but isn't the way to go for most torque under the curve or speed.

If a significant power producing Gen I SB was already in-hand, I'd go straight to EFI Connection's 58x system.

It doesn't magically make a TPI faster. A 6L80 has a tremendous first gear that is the equivalent of 4:10 and numerically higher rear gears....but allows you to still have a decent final O/D gear.

I failed to put emphasis upon my point. A 6L80 will make a TPI faster the same way puttin' a 3.90, 4.10, etc. rear end will make a TPI faster...but while still maintaining highway fuel economy.

How are you going to control it?

Re: 6L80 Trans TPI conversion...

Control it!!! How are you going to install it? Those things are huge. A 4l80E fits nice and tight and it is turbo 400 size. A 6l80 is MUCH BIGGER. You would have to lower the engine and possibly move it forward to have a chance. The height is going to demand some cutting which means trimming the console and playing with the heater duct and radio. I would LOVE to have pics of this adventure. Even if you fail I salute you for having the grit to try it. They are the ultimate trans though and we could have paddle shifting on the steering wheel then.

Re: 6L80 Trans TPI conversion...

I would be interested in one behind my 383 in my 1990 C1500 truck with 4.30 gears. Definitely would have to have a custom torque converter to hookup to a SBC flexplate. I have one in my G8 and it's a very nice transmission once you get all of the settings in the programming set right. It shifts very nicely! However, I see $$$ being a problem as it could be cheaper for some to go with the 6 speed from TCI with a .75 overdrive gear compared to the .67 from the 6L80e.
