700r4 problems

I have a Monster rebuilt 700r4 transmission, and it worked great to begin with.. but now only first gear and reverse work. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Monster told me it is most likely the valve body, and they will pay for parts, but not labor. I am a good mechanic and can do a lot of things myself, so I can replace it whatever has to be done. If I replace the valve body if that is what is it, then is it an easy fix? And does anyone have a DIY as to how to do it? It would really help because I can't drive my car!

Re: 700r4 problems

Having just first and reverse is a sign that the governor gear has gone away. Under the domed cover, drivers side, toward rear of transmission.

Do you have to pull the transmission out of the car to replace that?

No. Pulling the crossmember and lowering the back of the trans some gives more room to work.

And are you sure that is the problem? I'm not sure how much monster would replace. Thu might think I'm just trying to get parts, so I don't want to replace many things on it, if you get what I'm saying?

You're kidding me right? Fact is, if the governor gear has gone away, which they do, the transmission will only have 1st and reverse. So get your *** out there and pull it out. Take a look at it. That is the only way to tell if that is the problem.

Otherwise, let Monster Transmission honor their warranty. But then again, maybe the trans is out of warranty, but maybe not. I don't know.

I also don't know if the g-gear is gone, as I can't see it from here.

15 - 30 minutes and it's out, take a look at it...

Re: 700r4 problems

Well, I replaced the governor gear.. and about 260 miles later, it stopped shifting again... and I thought it was due to the shift boot being too taught.. but I just took it off and the transmission won't let me pull down into first.. Like, the transmission will literally not go down into first by the shifter.. it stops at 2nd gear on the shifter.. Do you know what this could be caused by? Sorry that I've been asking so many questions..

Re: 700r4 problems

It stopped shifting again and I can't manually shift through because the shift boot is too taught. Sorry, should have been more clear.

So disconnect the shifter cable at the trans and see if you can move the selector lever on the trans into 1st.
If you can , then the shifter/ cable is your problem.
If you can't ,then the problem is inside the trans
