327 engine and tranny swap
I just bought a 1987 Camaro Z28 from a friend. The stock engine has been replaced with 327 small block but the tranny is still standard. I was wondering if it is possible to swap the stock automatic tranny for a manual T-56. If i do, would I have to worry about the engine mileage vs. the transmission's mileage. Would the two mate properly? What safety or mechanical issues might I come across? I've worked on cars before but this will be the biggest thing I've done and would like to do it safely and correctly. Im also planning to upgrade to a 427 sometime in the not to distant future.

A 327 is for all intents and purposes, a 1985 and older 350.

Re: 327 engine and tranny swap
An issue that I forgot to mention was that the 305 engine was swapped for a 327 from a 79 corvette. Also I guess whoever did that couldn't find a way to properly mate the bell housing so they simply left it off. MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE! How would I find a replacement bell housing to resolve this short-term and if I decided to use a short-block 454?

When you say bell housing what do you mean, with out the bell housing the transmission will not can not be connected to the engine, If you have an automatic transmission right now the bell housing is part of the trans, If you are talking about a manual trans any bell housing for a gen 1 sbc will work on you engine. Even the LT1 bell housing is the same,The flywheel is different and you would need one from a gen1 sbc that has the two piece rear main seal.
