Tranny Noise
I have a 90 Camaro with a 700r4. I installed a brand new 700r4 and torque converter today. Everything is perfect with it except one thing...somewhere between the torque converter and flywheel is a ticking noise. You can only hear it while under load...either in reverse or drive and at low RPMs or at a stop. As soon as you put it in park or neutral it disappears or after you get your speed/rpm's up. Also, there wasn't any kind of ticking with the old tranny either. Idea's anyone???

Re: Tranny Noise
This may sound dumb, but is it possibly an exhaust leak? If it's small enough you would only hear it at slow speed under a load. If you took exhaust off it may not have sealed back perfect. Just a suggestion.

Re: Tranny Noise
Today I spent about 4 hours trying to track down the ticking with no luck. I shimmed the flywheel to make sure the torque converter was fully seated. I also thoroughly checked the flywheel for any cracks, had none that I could see. As far as I could tell there are no exhaust leaks either. Would a bad torque converter cause that ticking noise under load?

Re: Tranny Noise
Update...so after going round and round with Monster Transmission, that's where I bought the tranny and TC by the way. They are sending me a new torque converter to see if that's the problem. They say they actually test drive each tranny before it's shipped....I find it hard to believe that they missed this loud clicking in reverse and drive....they also missed a good size leak in the rear tranny seal where the drive shaft goes in the tranny. All of these problems immediately occurred right off the bat from the first time I fired the Camaro back up. I've replaced the tranny in this car at least 5 times over the 18 years I've had it and never have had a problem like this so I don't think it's any kind of installation error on my part. This is my first encounter with Monster Transmission and I have to say I'm not impressed even from all the good reviews I've seen....I have to constantly hound them to follow through on their promises. Has anyone else had a bad experience with Monster?

Re: Tranny Noise
Ill see if I can get a sound clip for u guys.. today I replaced the flywheel and replaced the starter...it looked like it might have been hitting it. After all that....didnt change a thing. If the tranny was just slighly out of alignment from the flywheel....would that cause that tick?

Re: Tranny Noise
For anyone having the same problem...it turned out to be the torque converter. I swapped it out with another that Monster sent me and the clicking quit.

Re: Tranny Noise
I have very slight ticking only sometimes in reverse. It's not always there, but sometimes. I bought a used trans with a TCI 242700 and I hear many have problems with TCI. For now I can't afford another TC nor have the time to do a swap. Just moved and the bank is broke. I'll look into a new TC in the future. What is the cause or the happening when this tick arises? What exactly makes the tick...tick?

Re: Tranny Noise
Related to this noise. This past week, I started getting a clicking noise, similar to the one described in this thread.
I do not hear noise when in park or neutral. . The noise is very apparent in reverse or drive. My foot is on the brake, and the car is not moving in any event Seeing as the car is not moving I would think that helps eliminate a few things. When the brake is released and the vehicle goes forward or reverse, the noise continues. It is not there when slipped into neutral when the vehicle is moving. It seems to be getting louder over the past few drives. It is now sitting.
I was thinking maybe one the the fins in the converter is nicking something, as the output side of the tranny is not moving, so by my limited logic it has to be on the input side of things, The sound seems related to, but not exactly in synch with engine speed, seems to lag slightly.
The other concern is premature shifting. Hey, I know, the older we get the more premature our "shift" gets. When you stomp on the gas pedal it does not want to wind up before shifting. It wants second gear by 2000-2400rpm. Maybe a TV cable adjustment? (tighter or looser?)
The tranny is heavily rebuilt. Similar to Bruce Jenner in that not all the original parts are there anymore. MY tranny has been modded with Transgo high perf kits, beast sunshell, Vette servos and 4L65 input and output planetary clusters. I don't know about Bruce had put in, but have a good idea of what parts he had removed.
Any thoughts or ideas, or clarification that you can offer on my tranny would be graciously accepted.
