carrier confusion
Hey fellas I'm finally getting my winter projects started on the 92 camaro. I'm changing my rear brakes to discs and when I have my axles out I want to change my rear gears to a 3.42 . I counted my drive shafts rotations vs one rotation of the tire, both tires turned the same direction and looks to be a 2.73 to 1. I want to order a set of gears from summit but Im confused as to what carrier I have. I belive it's a series 2. But the more research I do the more confused I get. I'm either going to order the Allstar or summit brand ones. I'm on a budget so need to keep it cheap and simple.
Re: carrier confusion
Your 2.73 gears are on a 2 series. Don't be surprised if the cheap gears make a lot of noise. Sometimes they don't, but often they do. Get a USA Standard installation kit to go with the gears.

You most likely have a open differential, = Non Posi Unit.
You really will not know what's in there until you take off the cover.
You say you don't have the money (most of us do not)but now is the time to save for a Limited Slip Differential, AKA = Posi Unit.
If you decide to do that we will supply you with more info. on the subject.

Re: carrier confusion
Not a good way to tell what you have. I've seen several rear ends that had a standard differential that turned both wheels in the same direction. I've lost money on few of them, but I learned my lesson. Never trust the wheel turning test. Always remove the cover to see what you have.

Re: carrier confusion
on the factory 7.5 rear end, 3.42 and numerically lower use the same carrier and 3.73 and numerically higher use a different carrier.

Re: carrier confusion
explain that to a friend of mine that right now, as i type this, has to order a ring gear spacer because he is trying to put a factory posi diff out of an early Z28 with 3.73 gears into his 85 Camaro that has the factory 3.42 gears... he didn't notice the difference until about a half hour ago when he tried putting the new diff into the housing and only the tips of the teeth were touching..
Re: carrier confusion
I don't know what he has got, but something isn't right. I've built more of these 7.5 rear ends than I can count, and I know without a doubt that the 3.23 to 4.56 use a 3 series differential.
Re: carrier confusion
Yea, that's what I was thinking. Someone probably took out a 2.73 and installed a thick 3.42 sometime in the past.
Using a ring gear spacer in any rear end is a bad idea, but it's especially bad in the 7.5-7.6. The machined band around the differential that centers the ring gear is not very wide on the 7.5 differentials and a ring gear spacer moves the ring gear completely off of this band, which allows the ring gear to float on the differential. This can cause all kinds of problems. The thick 3.73 would be a much better way to go.
