Zexel Torsen question

I picked up a rear out of a 99 with a zexel torsen and 2.73 gears for $50 my plan is to re gear it but not sure which series carrier gear set I would need to order. My question is do I need series 2 gears or series 3 gears? They are 28 spline axles and when I search I keep getting contrasting info on what series gear set I would need. The zexel is a 9030.

2.73 factory torsen is a 2 series. You need a ring set for 2 series. They do make 3.42-3.73's in 2 series still i believe. Maybe even3.90's. I ran 3.73's on a 2 series

Correct, when you order the gears you need to get the thick gears for the 2 series.

Re: Zexel Torsen question

Ok thanks guys I tore her all down tonight with the help of my 19 month old. Looks like the carrier bearing race on the non ring side is shot. I was planning on doing all new seals and bearings anyway just need a slide hammer and the bearing seating tools.

Opposite side of ring gear, carrier bearing race

Re: Zexel Torsen question

The guy I bought it from said he never ran it and didn't want to take the time to pull the cover to see what was in it. My take was he ran it and sounded like a mess so he didn't want to bother with it. The carrier looks great with little to no signs of wear but that race was shot. Other bearings and races looked fine with no pitting and smooth as glass.

It looks like Richmond makes a series 2 3.90 gear. I was going to go with 3.73 and still might based on price point, but with the final drive ratio of the 700r4 I could go a bit steeper.

Depending on the motor you might be happier with 3:42's I have a 350 TPI heads cam etc and peak torque is just under 3k rpm 3:73's were better off the line but at the expense of noise/mileage at 75-80mph the 3:42's I think are a great compromise... At least with the way I drive and with my motor... Just mentioning to spur thought before you spend $$$$

I'm not sure where the peak torque is on my motor but the "dyno" sheet from comp has with their cam it is at 3900 rpms with the cam installed at 0*. When we timed my cam it is 2* retarded from their spec sheet so it should bring the torque curve a little lower probable around 3700. With my 3000 stall right now it flashes to around 3400 so I'm right on the edge but that is also with the car rolling at 20mph and 3.08 rear end. It usually just knocks the tires off but once it hooks it dogs something horrible.

When I was doing the calculations this is what I got for 4th gear in the 700r4 at 75 mph with 27" tire:
4.10 - 2679 RPM
3.90 - 2548 RPM
3.73 - 2437 RPM
3.42 - 2234 RPM
3.08 - 2012 RPM (current setup and pretty close RPM wise)

2500 RPM is less than what my DD and close to what my truck currently run so I figured that would be a nice highway RPM (our speed limit is 65 on highways). I was also thinking with my powerband a little higher in the RPM range the car will behave a little better and won't shift out of OD as much.
