9 bolt axle bearing question

So being that Im a procrastinator, I bought an axle bearing kit a while back and due to quarantine, finally have time to install. Well, I cut the first collar off and open the kit, and the new bearing seems to be a different style. The old bearing is more of the cone shape and the new is "squared". The diameter will fit int he axle tube. I'd have to remove the inner race to do so. My question is, did I get what I was supposed to in my order? The new collars and seals are an exact match, but the bearing is different. I've remember m conversation with the vendor and I asked if these were correct for an 86 IROC w/ 9bolt, and they assured me that this was correct even though the description said 87-89, all BW 9 bolts would be the same. Before I cut out the old race and press these and the collar onto the axle, I wanted to confirm with you experts. Any advice is appreciated. I did a parts search online and can only find the "squared" style for 87 and up.

Re: 9 bolt axle bearing question

Looks right to me.

The outer race presses into the housing end. It wears as much as the cone (rollers) and inner race. It must be replaced along with the part that's pressed onto the axle. You can measure its OD and thickness to make sure it's the same, but it looks like it is.

Thanks. The reason I was asking was because this new bearing seems to be an "all in one" style, not like what is being removed where the race is separate.

My assumption would be that once I press this new bearing and collar on, it will take a little doing to get it back into the axle housing since the new bearing and race are not separate pieces.

Ahh... yes, the old one must have come apart then... knock the old outer race out if it's still inside the housing; put that on the axle; and the retainer plate may press it in, or you might have to GENTLY tap the axle to get it to seat in there.

That race should gently pull out with a little wiggle.

Re: 9 bolt axle bearing question

Yeah that's kinda one of the downsides of that axle design in general... although, the majority of the time, the reason the seal leaks in the first place, is because the bearing is bad anyway.

At least you can shrink the bearing on with temperature, as long as you do it CAREFULLY; you don't necessarily have to pound it, or press it, on.

Re: 9 bolt axle bearing question

It's just the grease holding the race on the bearing. If you try you can get the cup off the cone, but there is no need.
Getting the one race out of my housing was quite a pain, I wound up having to cut it. Next time I am just going to run the MIG on the cup real hot and wait for it to cool

one side wiggled out, one side is a little stuck. I should be able to cut it out. The axle seals werent leaking on mine, but I have the car torn down and figured I'd swap the bearing and seals.

Soooooooooooooooooo????? Did the new bearings fit the axle?

When you ask the Forum a question with specifics and pictures, would be nice to update to maybe show us the other people with same questions if the solution was ever found or not...

Did you use the new bearings? Did you have to find the cone type bearings as original? If so, what part #s? etc......

and yes, I know this thread is over 5 years old, but I'm beyond frustrated
