Flywheel for L31 Vortec
Guys I'm looking for a flywheel for my L31 Vortec 350 build. Not looking for anything "race" or lightweight. Just a good ole flywheel. Any suggestions.
While I'm here, is there any difference between a later 80's 1pc. rms block and the Vortec, with regard to the flywheel?
I don't have a starter yet. Does it matter if the flywheel is 153 or 168 tooth? ...and if it doesn't matter, is there a preference?
Thanks,

Any good stock or stock replacement one for 86-up, or any arbitrarily expensive one in the stock size for that matter, will work fine. A typical parts-store brand you'll come across, that's been around for at least half a century, is Pioneer. There are others butt that one is probably the most common.
153-tooth (12.8" dia) is stock for our chassis. Not sure that the starter for the 168-tooth (14") wheel will clear everything. While the larger wheel is arguably "better", it's not worth the can of worms you might be opening. I'd definitely recommend a modern gear-reduction starter though, and get rid of that stuuuuupid 100-lb Stone Age direct-drive Delco POS from before WW2.

Re: Flywheel for L31 Vortec
Ok cool. Thanks for the reply. I ran a 153 tooth and gear reduction starter on the last two builds, figured I'd go that route again, but just wanted to clarify that block. Guy who built the motor said make sure the flywheel is for a vortec block. I texted him after I posted, and he clarified he meant 1pc. rms, which of course isn't only on the vortecs.

The block and crank are the same as later L05s. (880 block, can't recall the crank casting offhand) There's nothing "Vortec" about the block, as such; that's a property of the heads and intake exclusively.

Not to split hairs, but weren't the block and crank a whole new casting for the Vortec? -While not "different" per se in terms of architecture. Different metallurgy? ....There's nothing LS1 about the later 4th gen brakes, but we all call 'em LS1 brakes. Kinda the same? Maybe not? Lol.

Same casting number... 880... to me that says "the same casting"... butt what do I know
We call the brakes that just as our community shorthand for "98-2002 F-body". The 6-cyl cars got em too, so they're not "LS1" regardless. In any case the factory never called em that, only us morons out here in meatspace. So, probably not really applicable.

Ha ha. And here I was thinking it was a miracle because I've never had to replace it (knock knock) My 1970 Barracuda starter needed replacing once a year.
