SLP Posi, why so cheap?

I don't get it ..... I bought the SLP posi for my 91 firebird. I love it. But why was it so cheap when compared to Auborn posi units that are $400.

I know the basics of it. Same one as in new Z28's and Trans Am's. Its used only for 89 and up (28 spline axles and its carrier 3). My friend wants a posi and doesnt want to spend so much on it for his 87. And i told him unless he swaps out the axles to 28 spline hes SOL.

So what is the gain of spending the $300 more on the other units?

The SLP posis are take offs. This means that they are taken out of the new camaros while they put a better one back in. The difference is the one they put in is stronger and a better unit.

going to cost another 100 to have someone install it unless you want to do it yourself. I had the gears all changed and i was without a depth setter, nor have the coordination to figure it all out. So, i let someone do it for me so i wouldnt be driving down the road, have a bolt fall out or something and have the rear end lock up. Thats my luck.

Actually, it costed me 250 to get the posi and gears swapped out. Would be 100 if he didn't have to do the gears. Place is in south jersey near the betsy ross/ tocony palmyra bridges. If you ever need to know I'll give you the name of the place.

You have other options. Powertrax costs more money, but you don't have to set-up the gears(probably can install yourself or much cheaper to have it done), won't have to install bearings, and it will work with the older 26 spline axles(no axle cost). After all that, the extra cost of the powertrax isn't much.

Most likely it won't. '89 was the x-over year so there's a slight chance it might. But my junkyard findings on late 89 model (May/June) turned up 26 splines.
