Feeling kinda guilty ...

Most you guys know all the trouble I have had lately . Well today on the interstate , well and off . I knowticed my car was getting sluggish again , like when my coil went out . So when I got home I popped the hood to take a look at the coil to see if I can see anything . Sure enough , there's a crack in the top of it ! ...What's the deal guys ? ?? Why is this my second coil to kill ? ..The MSD blaster I got only lasted 3 months and this one (hypertech) only last 2 days !!! Is it possible that Im not using all the volatage or something and its leaking out in the coil ? But I know some of you guys run the MSD blaster and Accel and dont have problems . Karl has that 15 year old Accel and still has not problems !!!!!

Wow... that's frckin' weird. You're putting these coils in the stock location? Maybe you should try a remote mount coil. Both of my coils (Accel computerized HEI supercoil and MSD Blaster SS) were remote mount units. 'Fact, my original GM one is still sitting in it's original spot! Is your bracketry bent in that area? Is a motor mount busted, causing the whole engine to move, and the coil's getting beat on by the a/c system? Weird.

No its not in stock location .I have it remote mounted . It's a replacement for the stock one . But I have it mounted about in the same place Karl does , except mine is on the firewall Your right Tom , this is weird ! It's not hanging upside down either .

Hey Tom , Where do you have your remote mount Blaster SS coil mounted ? ...I might get one of those and mount it there . Or see if MSD can send me one of those back instead of that one that I have . How long has it lasted you in this location ?

I think some girl at school must have put a hex or something on me to have car trouble . I dont think I've had enough trouble lately do you guys ?

If it's on the firewall did you make sure to put it far enough down so the hood doesn't smack it?

Make shure the wires to the coil are in good condition and are not shorting out somwere and causing the coil to short out. It will get extremely hot when this happens.

What's possble is that your mounting is NOT ALLOWING ANY MOVEMENT and the location absorbs lots of punishment and your results are.....
I can only say about my Accel experiences.
I used thick aluminum stock and made an "L" bracket, hung it upside down (coil wire is attached on the "bottom".
Do you have any rubber padding to help with vibrations?
What type of attaching screws ya using?
Sheet metal?
Wood?
Give clues.
Something is causing it to crack.
Is crack by the plug tower or somewhere on base?
Have you check underside of the hood for visible clues/marks?

I had it mounted on the side of the distributor cap about an inch away .I dont know what kinda screws it is im using . They do have rubber o-rings on them . Im not totally sure its a crack . But I did look at the coil , and you know where the plug-ins are on the top , there's like a little line (not crack) and the glue or whatever it is there is like sticky and visible where it was not like that before I put the coil in , I even ran across it with my finger and pulled a little up with my finger nail . Im seriously just thinking of mounting this coil back in the stock location . I know a may not get a year out of it , but it sure beats the hell out of having to buy a new coil every 2 days b/c they take a crap on me .lol

Cheat.
Call manufacture, ask them why they breaking on ya?
Don't tell them it's mounted in different location.
See what they say.....
Time to do some leg work.
Coulda been all the wrong effort from bad wiring that helped this one die, too

Karl , Thanx for all your help .
Seriously I was thinking about talking to the manufactorer .These coils aren't cheap , we pay good money for them . They should be able to stand up to these conditions .If it was a $20 coil , Id say Ok its cheap , but I paid $54.00 for my hypertech and $43.00 for my MSD .
I just took my Hypertech off to compare to my MSD coil .My Hypertech which has only been on for 2 days looks like its in worse shape . The clear crap on top , (not sure what it is ) clear stuff on the top that covers the whole top part , looks like its risen up some , like when you put something in the oven and it rises .For now Im going to put my MSD back on , b/c I think its in better shape , I will send the hypertech in , get my money back or whatever . But I dont feel like going about and buying ANOTHER coil for now .This is just getting ridiculous you know .After I get the hypertech taken care off , I will take care of my MSD .

My Hypertech also has some powdery white crap on it . not alot , but enough .

I have an ideau

I have an ideau of what it might be . I was just hooking my MSD back up and noticed the new electrical connectors they put on , one of them the connector does not go down all the way . The plastic piece that is suppose to clip on to hold it down , comes up . Im NOT taking this thing back to the shop , Im so sick of being without it . Im just ganna put some electrical tape around it to hold it down all the way .

Were all of these the GM direct-fit coils?

Can you take a picture? I'd say to return that Hypertech if you can, it shouldn't get f'd up that quick.

I'll try to take a pic of my remote mount coil around 5:00 and put it up. Granted, I have removed my air conditioning, but it'll give you an idea of how I mounted it. I made a bracket out of Home Depot 1/8" steel plate, 3" wide.

The previous coil, the accel supercoil, sat on a homemade bracket between the TB and alternator. I'll take a pick of that location, too. But that accel coil saw a hell of a lot more vibration than the msd coil is seeing now...

The coil is still bad , I can tell .Im still ganna return that Hypertech , and send the MSD in .I just finished spreading some dirt in my yard , Im enjoying a Miller Lite , anyone care to join me ?
