Might get a Cam, read

I am thinking about getting a cam for my car. 1986 Firebird 2.8L.
Auto. 140k miles

What do I all need to buy?
(not a v8 lol)

How much hp gain? 20? what about trq?

I need to know where I am get them in Canada. Because if I order from Summit, Shipping will be outragous from the USA.

I will install it myself, I'm sure my dad would help me, He used to hot rod cars in his younger days.

The reason why I want to do this is because my Friend is always dissing my car because its a v6, he says its slow. He has a 1985 Impala 305. Big boat that shoots the blue.
His car looks gay, and runs gay, and he puts down my car because of a v6 and he thinks he can beat me cause he has a 305, he thinks its all fast or something.

I got a month and a half to save up money and install it before I get my Licence. (i'm 15). I'm not gonna tell him I Installed a cam lol.

I just wanna see the look on his face when I woop his ***.

Also gas mileage is KINDA a concern. Gas is 79 cents a liter here.

How much will it effect my gas mileage? 5mpg?

Whats the difference between cams like a smooth cam or a lopey cam? I know they sound different but what about power, mileage?

I know my posts are always too long. Sorry!

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, I did do A search but I didnt find exactly what I needed.

Or maybe I would be better off with bolt ons so gas money doesnt run me broke.

What should I get for Bolt ons? How much HP from each mod?

I'm applying places tommorow to get a job... So I should start bringing in money soon.

I was in your position a few months ago just about to get my license albeit, here in west texas gas is about 1.15-1.20 a gallon, don't know what that would be in liters. Anyway, the best advice I can give you as far as bolt ons would be the intake and the exhuast first of all. Anything you do without these two things won't realize it's full potential until you do. And just intake or just exhaust won't give as much as both together. Those two mods will give you a noticable sotp difference. I don't know if this would be considered a bolt on, but gears would make your car feel faster if not increase power. 3.73 gears are next on my list of mods after a stb, then headers maybe if my dad will relent and let me mess with the engine itself.

hmm

1 Gallon = 3.7854 Liters..

So lets see.....

79.9 * 3.7854 = $3.02 a Gallon.

I pay $3.02 a Gallon for 87 I think Octane gas.

*cry* Goes and does exhaust mods for better mileage lol.

Cat back system here I come when I find a job.

And 92 Octane gas is 92.9 a liter,

92.9 x 3.7845 = I pay $3.51 a Gallon for 92 octane gas.

Carrying around a bowling ball or subwoofer/amp system in the hatch will decrease mileage, too.

Certain mods will increase the HP of the motor by increasing it's efficiency, and thus, will increase gas mileage. Some examples are a free-flowing intake and exhaust. (And of course, the major tuneup.)

May I suggest underdrive pulleys for your engine. That takes about 15 minutes to do if you know what you are doing. and that also free's up some hp also. Look on www.THUNDERRACING.com They carry them. Cause thats where I got mine.

Sorry to ask such a stupid question but what do underdrive pullys do? They increase gas mileage aswel has hp?

Do I need to buy a Haynes manual to do this? (i'm 15 remember).

an underdrive pulley is your crank pulley. on my bird you can look down in the engine compartment and see it just fine. it shouldnt take you but 15 min to change it. just take your belt off and 3 bolts hold it on. 10 mm i think. should give you about a 8 hp increase. i dont know about gas milage.

As tom said, take out all excesive weight when you go to race the jerk. A good tune up with hp parts is always a plus. Then an intake, cat-back, underdrive pully. And while your ordering from summit get a new power coil, more spark in the hole, better burn, better mpg and power. And belive it or not, and alignment will make a differece. I put adjustable suspension on my s10 and now its slower, and burn more gas. You never have a "true" alignment with that.

You forgot ot mention the crank bolt in the center. Not the 3 around it. I forgoet what size it is. But I also got the alt. pulley also. It ran me I think 80 bucks shipped. But yes I agree w/ tom a good tune up and take all un needed weight out before you race. THe pulley's just slide off but remember this you WILL NEED a smaller belt after installing the pulley's as they are alot smaller than factory ones.

Mike can't use an underdrive pulley set; like me, he's got an '86, and they don't make pulleys for our v-belt setups. They only make pullies for the 87-up 2.8/3.1 motors, which use a serpentine drive. It's a freakin' bummer. And to make matters worse, our alternator pulley is ribbed- you won't find that on another V8 f-body.

The pulley set comes w/ a crank pulley and a alt. pulley. And the belt you can go to any auto parts store and pick one up. I think after testing 5 belts on my car I think I found that a 98 inch belt worked on my car. But dont hold me to it. Since then I have done alot to my car and now I m working on it again . (Always looking to get more out of it) I could have swore that ASP made pulley's for the older V6. Sorry Mike
