Thump

I have a question...I think the answer might be transmission mount, but I'm not too sure.

When I floor it at a dead stop, the car makes kind of a thumping sound. It's not too violent, but I don't need it getting any worse. It sounds vaguely like its coming from the middle of the car, and it started not too long after I started spinning out a few times a week leaving work, and driving it real hard.

Is it a transmission mount? Did I give enough info?

Jason

Onvrclck is probably correct. You'll need to support your tranny with a jack and a piece of wood as you unbolt the mount. It's very easy to change, just make sure you've got some decent jackstands to sit under the front of the car. Driving hard will only break more, so if you're going to keep driving this way you may want to consider a polurethane trans mount.

it's the tranny mount. Be very carefull about flooring it and spinning tires. Sometimes the threads on the mount give away, and you end up stripping the threads. that could leave you with a hole in your pocket.

Thanks guys, I'll check it out this week. It seems to be getting a little worse. I still managed to race another 89 RS and beat it though.

4th one in two years? And I thought my "three in two years" was bad!! Dude, get the ES poly mount... I've had it on there since '97, and it's still holding! Hell, you'll pay for the $20 thing in no time at the rate you're going!

Yep, sounds just like my tranny mount not being assembled peropperly. Also check your right front motor mount.

Well TOm, the 91Z28 L98 Vert I was about to buy was driven through a barb wire fence at an estimated 120 so the guy I was going to buy it from is going to do an LS1/T56 swap in it now that he is forced to spend time on it. He's a good friend of mine, and just made the mistake of letting someone else drive it....but anyways, he's giving me entire Radiator to tailshaft including wiring/accessories, blah blah blah for $500, SOOOOO, hopefully when I can afford it

Wow, $500? Damn good deal! Let us know how it goes! (And I bet you'll -really- need a poly mount after that swap! )

By the way, could this be at all caused from rolling too fast in reverse and then shifting into drive? I mean I'm not going like 30 mph or anything, but just fast enough to give it that little jerk. Or maybe its the burnouts.

What brand should I get, Energy Suspension?

Or would this give me a reason to do a T5 swap?

shifting from reverse to drive is dangerous even if you are rolling. i suggest always coming to a complete stop when shifting from drive to reverse or vice-versa.

Most likely your broken mount was cause by the burnout, most mount break for that reason. Firebird and Camaro owners are notorious for accelerateing too fast all of the time and breaking mounts. I would say that 90% of the time a broken mount is caused by that, 8% of mounts break due to wear and tear, and 2% is other.

Whatever you do, I highly suggest a mount that is not from pepboys. I've replaced 1 mount made by them over the year when it broke 6 months later, and then i got smart. I went Energy Suspension, i would think any brand would do.

This last one I broke I was sort of racing a friend, and I felt it as soon as I launched. I told my friend as we were goin through first "Yup, broke a tranny mount" and before he said Huh, it went THUD...and I let off.......

Where do you buy your tranny mount Ovrclck350? I tried auto zone and checker and all they had was ones for an automatic transmission. Did you get it online?

I have an auto...and I've used, ABC, Autozone, and O'Reilly's.

There has been much debate Elevario......a T5 is a T5....see if they carry the one for the V8 T5 and if not, TRY an automatic one......they make universal Tranny mounts, and I HAVE heard of people using an automatic on a standard. For some reason, some of the V6 T5 mounts came liquid filled and cost like $150 through a dealer.

Doesn't prothane make one for a bit cheaper ($15 instead of $20)?

So AutoZone carries the Energy Suspension mount? I'll have to pick it up.

Are there any tranny parts I should pick up and install while doing this? No parts I need to order, just anything you guys think I should get from AutoZone while I'm there. Transmission filter and fluid, maybe?

I just installed the mount and that was it. Someone said you had to drill holes bigger or something?? I didnt have to, direct bolt. Up to you on fluid/filter etc.
