V6 Acceleration(lack of)
V6 Acceleration(lack of)
I have a 3.1 with 124,000 miles, and while the car runs OK and rarely is there any problems (except the oil leak just fixed!), I find I have a pretty hard time accelerating onto the highway. Anyone else have this problem with there 6's? I feel I have to rev up to a ridiculous amount just to get to 60mph. Now, this wouldn't be a "problem", except for the fact that this is a CAMARO, people expect my car to be fast, and when they hear the accelerator, think otherwise. It's embarrassing enough when some soccer mom's minivan is accelerating harder than my camaro onto the freeway than my 'muscle car', and is partly the reason I am moving up to a V8. Sorry to this is so long, but how does your guys 6's handle up to traffic/highway acceleration compared to other cars?
i dont know about anyone else, but i have a stickshift, and i still get dogged by like accords and junk once in a while. mine's a 92 also, and i'm in pretty much the same situation as you, it runs beautifully considering it's 10 yrs old, and i've got about 130k on it. but honestly, 140horse, 180 torque is what the v6s are pushing (pretty sure), and even the stupid econoboxes out there nowadays come w/ like 225horse. gotta take into account that like every car out there now is like fiberglass too, and our mexico-made 3rd gens are all steel baby. find your consolation in the fact that when YOU wrap your car around a tree, the steel will pay off, and all the little plastic tonka toys driving around you will be demolished!
and our mexico-made 3rd gens are all steel baby.
These Third Gen Camaros & Firebirds were built in several plants and locations.
NONE IN MEXICO.
Norwood, Ohio
Van Nuys, California (I pass by and have raced infront of that old location now, so close where I live! Plus my 1985 Firebird was made there!).
Eventually up to Canada for final production.
The majority of the 3rd gen rides here are at the end of their life cycles of road usage.
I got my 1974 Corvette that way back in 1995.
I bought from a guy who was abondoning the "undesired year Stingray"
I rebuilt much of the Corvette & it's still strong after only 139,000 original miles.
Many here, will not go that far.
Hoping only a power add on will "Help".
How many have changed their timing chain after the 75,000 mark?
That's a big improvement in power.
Compliment that project with a distributor rebuild, new remote mount coil & fresh wires, cap & plugs.
You'll feel like you've rebuilt your engine for about 30,000 more miles.
Ya gotta really want to keep this old, aged drivetrain, Camaro/Firebird of yours, on the road. That means some real extra effort projects.
I only may race a ***** if I need that spot on the raodway.
Let the ricers wreck their rides.
Preserve these F Bodies. They are cheap to buy & own classics!
Recent look see how much 1974 Corvettes...
About $8500 - 10K. I paid $4800.
Regard that $ as tax free not

Haven't spied a "Hencho en Mexico" Chevy engine block yet?
I like that Sept 25th joke!
GM sourced out many parts for cars to many outta USA plants.
Lower labor costs=greater GM CEO Roger Smith Profit
IF correct, I'll bet it was the interior trim pieces of plastics that this plant made.
Some of my 1985 Firebird parts are also from China & Canada, too (so says stampings). Yet my car was assembled right down the street in Van Nuys from where I live now.

I BET all your car needs in a GOOD tune-up . If you dont want to do a WHOLE tune-up . Just change your plugs , wires , cap and rotor , and I think you will be surprised . I hope this helps and goodluck .

Dumb question: What does a WHOLE tuneup entail?
Also, where can I get a distributor rebuild kit?

Distributor rebuild kit is your own effort.
You remove distb.
Rebuild it on the bench, using carb cleaner, some axle grease, a roll pin remover tool, some sand paper.
Add the new under cap electric parts, you're done.
