Does anyone else's 3.1 do this?
Does anyone else's 3.1 do this?
i have a 91 RS 3.1, a couple of my friends have one also, we were messing around last night talkin about burnouts n such and i was talkin about power braking in my car.....and they both told me it wouldn't barely spin how they had to drop it in first to get it to do anything....so we took they're cars out first and sure enough they could barely spin in first then we took mine out and i left it in drive pressed the brakes gave it half throttle and it'll smoke it up......what's different with my car? as far as i know it is bonestock.......any help or comments
would be appreciated

Slightly modded, all external bolt ons. The Mrs has no probs doing some
. When I was doing repairs to it, trying to find out some clunking noises, I left some nice ones out in the road infront of the house
Opps.

Opps. Yea, a friend of mine's 3.1 Camaro had a hard time doing too! But My 'bird has never had a problem. And with my mods I have even done some monsters ones with me and three other guys in the car. BTW, she's @ 115,000 now.....bought her with 72,000.

91RS...the 3.1 motor has 180-185 ft lbs of torque, while the 2.8's have 160...so that could account a tad bit but I doubt it. I can't imagine why they wouldn't be able to powerbrake it...unless they've got modifications that robbed their low-end power. Running oversized exhaust and certain other things will do that. Could also be from bad front brakes not being able to hold the car still. Half of it depends on whether you give it gas slowly or if you punch it. If you punch it, it should be able to spin regardless! My car will spin like CRAZY..like spin so the speedo is reading 40+ (when it actually works)...can do it in 1 or Drive. Once I did it through first and second gear...wasn't too smart but I gradually released the pedal so it was a smooth transition and didn't damage the tranny.

There must be something truly wrong with your friends cars if they can't spin their peg leg. Is it really that bad with an auto? All I have to do is punch it and I can spin first, second, and part of third anytime I want. It's not like your friends have posi or anything. Unless they put a unit in. I would love to! No more wearing out one tire before the other!

Yeah, I was thinkin the same thing elevario...unless they're just dumb...?
I'm sick of peg leg too. My drivetire is now a racing slick, where my left side is halfway between a slick and a Radial T/A. Fronts are about the same..I need new tires!!!

When i first got my car i coulnt do a burn out at all i got new shocks in back and was able to do a burn out bone stock. I still can do a burnout and i have 215,000 miles on my 3.1
I've only had my car since tonight. 3.1 V6 with 105k miles. No problems lighting them up in first.. sometimes I can bark in second, too.
And it has awesome tires.
Gotta stop with the harsh driving.. hehe.. gotta make sure its strong enough to put up with that punishment.

I swapped in a posi disc brake rear into my 1992 firebird 3.1 liter auto. I used to have 225-50 R15 tires on there, and i could bark them from a stoplight, just by hitting the gas, no brake needed. The tires wore out and I upgraded my rims to a set of 1985 TA 16X8 inch units wrapped with Kuhmo Ecsta Supra 245-50-R16 tires. Now it won't spin at all unless it is wet. The tire's width, diameter, and the amount of traction that a tire has will definitely change what it will do. I could bark mine all the time with the older, smaller, cheaper tires. These new ones stick like glue, though.

Yeah, I never replace only one tire. I do 2 at a time. And POSI is just plain cool..gives a better launch too. Not to mention gets rid of those embarassing pegleg tirespin launches.

You gotta have a posi rear..... I can BOIL my drivetire all day..like 100 ft treadmark....like it's nothing at all...but I can't get my non-drive tire to spin for more than a second or two even with oil covering the road and the tire!! It just won't do it...

Yeah..there's no way you should leave treadmarks like that without POSI. Here's a real POSI test for ya. Take a 90 degree left turn and about halfway through the turn, floor the gas...(works better with a stick because of the quicker response)...but on a non-posi rear, you'll kinda whip....with POSI, the reaction tends more towards doing a complete 180. Yeah, it's a tad dangerous..lol..but it's another way to tell! There's a way too when the car is up on a lift to like spin one of the tires or something..depending on what the other does, that'll tell you..I think the other tire should spin the opposite direction but don't quote me on that.

the 2.8 is dead now and it is sitting in a garage for winter, but wheni did a left turn and slammed the gas, the tail would begin to slide pretty good until i let off the gas, and the first day i drive it i almost did a 180 in the middle of the road off a left turn except that i slammed on the brake when i was horizontal, so maybe it is
the next time you have the rear of your car off the ground, put it in park, or 5th if you have a stick, and try to spin one of the tires. If the other one spins the opposite way with only a little bit of resistance, you have an open differential. If you can't spin either tire, then you have a limited slip differential. The open differentials are what came in the V6 cars, but someone may have special ordered one, swapped in a different rear end, or who knows what else. My car was originally a 3.23 geared open differential. It'd be cool if you do have a posi unit in there.

Re: Does anyone else's 3.1 do this?
I would not be worried if my car couldnt burn out unless it was real slow.
now what happens when you two race??? who wins.
If he wins, his car is better, nothing wrong with traction.
matter of fact you never want you car to spin the tires, spining tires gets you no where fast.
now if you kill him ever time you race and he still cant burn out, his motor is tired. plain and simple. they get tired, still run but lose lots of a$$.
