Crazy V6 idea
Crazy V6 idea
When you see the word crazy in a title round here, you know its gonna be interesting...
This idea is actually not about V6 cars, but about my V6. Some of you are gonna hate this idea, please don't flame; I only want constructive criticism.
I am going to remove the V6, and sell every part I dont need. I am going to find a 2.5 4cyl. block. Bore it as much as possible. Get a worked over version of the Cavalier/Grand Am GT QUAD 4 head with performance cams. If I cant make one of these fit on the 2.5, I would have one built to fit. Those engines had 180 hp out of the box. Forged internals, performance cams, pulleys, laptop, etc. I figure about 210 HP, or whereabouts. There would be plenty of space in the engine bay for a turbo. I would use 10-15 lbs of boost, and if possible maybe one day a little more. I'd go for 250-300 hp. I would get a T-5 tranny, since it would easily bolt up to the 2.5 iron duke block. The motor should bolt right into the engine bay.
I am doing this for interest and fun, not to make a fast car. If I wanted a fast car, I know get a 350 blah blah. But this could be a pretty cool car, shock value, fun, not to mention cornering, etc. It would probably not be feasible any time in the next few months, but the car is pretty much a beater and there isn't much else to do to it.
What do you guys think?

Wow..haven't heard that idea before....
Don't forget the nitrous now... And...hmm...wonder what kinda compression those motors get... With forged internals, 10-15 should be very feasible. Possibly even up to 20, depending on compression and the quality of those internals..... I'd shoot for 15-17 lbs of boost and a nice little shot of nitrous....and with the weight you will probably save from that 4 cylinder, plus the horsepower rating....I'm thinking that thing might just break into mid 13's with nitrous....?

The shock value would be worth the price of everything alone...

i dont think a quad 4 head will bolt to the 2.5 block. there is a company that makes RWD bellhousings for quad 4's. you can get almost 300 hp out of a naturally aspirated out of aquad 4 and i know gm has made 1500 hp with a race block quad 4 and 2 turbos. near 700 on a stock block.

I know on s-series.org they have guys with 2.5l making 150-175hp with quite a few mods. Now thats also with the "stock" head, not a quad or anything special like that.
I say go for it. I'm all about something different.

Yeah, I don't believe Quad 4 parts will work with the Iron Duke either. Was the Duke OHC, or was it pushrod? I can't remember. Honestly its not a bad idea, theres a good bit of go fast parts out there for the Duke and the Quad, more than the 60 degree V6's.

sick idea man... but why bother with the 'duke... i'm sure you can adapt a quad4 to a rwd tranny and turbo the hell out of it
or you can build a nice sbc with turbos (j/k you v6 ****'s

Ha ha..hey, torque is fun, but you can still have a decently fast car while being anemic on torque...the low end is just gonna suck. Like most 4 bangers out there now anyways...they don't move until you get 4000 rpms piled on them.

Ha ha...oh well of course you gotta love the torque, and the POWER...but this is about doing something different and strange, not the followed path again. I've got a small block Ford (5.0 HO) and the torque on that sucker makes me wet myself just thinking about it...with its mods, I'm guessing in the 350 ft lbs area. I'd love to find me a Chevy V8 now and compare and contrast.

i completely understand the being different factor, i also understand the cost factor. if i had an unlimited amount of money i would have been the first to do a twin turbo 60* v6 in a thirdgen camaro.

Bill, you can add some pep to that 2.5l w/o knowing major engine stuff.
Coils, wires, header, new/bigger carb, I'm sure a few other things around.

Bill, I belive they do
Try looking for a fiero header for a 2.5l. I belive thats what they put on the s10 2.5l engines.

I'm going to go to the local boneyard this weekend to check out a 2.5 block...I've weaseled them down to $25 over the phone, so if it doesnt look like crap, I'm gonna pick it up. But I imagine it will be a while before I get the machining done to it.

GM does make a double overhead cam in-line 6 that makes, as I recall, 270 horsepower. Check out the Trailblazer.
On the subject of the Quad 4, GM makes a supercharger for that engine. I don't know what the Quad 4 is rated at (actually was, I don't think they use it any more, having replaced it with the 2.2 Ecotec) but that supercharger ups the power to 190 horses. Check out the online performance parts catalog.

this motor is basically half of the pontiac 301....would the header from that work on the 2.5?
a) poncho 301 shoulda never been born!!!!
sukyreplacement to the 400.
b) still gotta make sure the header will fit.
do a search in the engine swap forum. A couple of people have dropped in some REAL PONCHO POWER including headers. see what brand/style they used to insure a proper fit.
