z28 tranny w/ corvette engine?
i know the title doesn't sound like it belongs in this board, but it kinda does. as some of you know, i'm soon to be swapping the ol' 6 banger out for a 350. i know i need a new tranny, but i was wondering if the tranny from a 3rd gen 5.7L will handle 300hp. i am almost definetely putting in an LT1 from a '94 corvette, which is 300hp. i think the '92 z28's had around 240hp, so would their tranny be fine with the extra hp? i'm spending around $2000 on the used engine, and if i need to shell out another $1500 for a new tranny i'll have to put my plans on hold. hopefully a tranny from a used camaro will do fine, cause it'll save me $800 or so. well, thanks for the help.

The bigger issue is wiring it up and the springs and other hook ups, if your using a 5 speed get one from a 3rd Gen. bolt up is the same for a v8. If your going auto, the 4th gen tranny won't work because it's electronic valve body.
Lets see some pics of the engine.

this pic doesn't show too much, but the engine hasn't come yet so i can't get any more pics

there should be ways/kits around the elctronic shiftin gfor the 4th gen tranny. I wouldn't trust any 3rd gen stock tranny w/300 hp. get it built before the swap & not worry about it afterwards.

so you think pullin a tranny from a junkyard (from a 350 camaro) wouldn't be a good idea? i guess i can look for a corvette tranny so it'll mate to the engine perfectly......any idea what years the corvette had LT1's?

Yes there is a kit for using a 4L80-E tranny in older cars but it's expensive. Yes a 4L60 no E from a 1992 Camaro would work fine behind your 300hp because the 4L60 has the same guts as the 4th gen.

ok sorry for sounding like a dumbass but i just want to make sure i completely know what you're saying. a tranny from a '92 z28 would work fine with a '94 vette engine (capable of handling the power, and also mates with it easily). and the 4L60 is the type of transmission that came in '92 z28's? i thought they had 700R's or something like that?

90 or 91 Camaros came with 4L60, just a new name for 700r4 only they made some really good upgrades!
Yes v8 bolt patterns are the same. just that a 60 degree tranny won't fit a 90 degree engine.

Your choice of tranny is great for one other reason.
I understand the tranny tailhousing of the F Bodies is "different" than the Corvette specific tranny tailhousing.
Definetly have the used tranny freshened up before usage.
At this tranny out of car moment, handing the tranny to that rebuilding talent, couldn't be easier.

a 700r4 will handle 300hp, how long is the question. I'd get a good core and have it rebuilt with quality bands and clutches and definately a Transgo kit. Its better to do it now instead of dreading it later. Also a trans cooler woulnd't hurt either

Why use a 700r4 when you can have a 4L60?? The 4L60 has better oil pump and more splines on the internal drive shafts.
