85 2.8 to 87 2.8

For anyone who remembers i said a week ago that i was going to get rid of the busted 2.8 and put in a 350 for my rideand i would have it on the road by end of summer but a friend of mine offered to sell his 1987 pontiac firebird with a 2.8 for $250 the engine runs so i'm gonna take that and i'm gonna take the interior as well and get rid of the rest.If i go and do this my car will be on the road in a month. And i really need that car on the road cause i got no means other transportation. The question is what is the difference between a 1985 2.8 and a 1987 2.8? also can anyone tell me how hard is it to swap and how do you hook up the vacuum lines. if anyone could get back to me that be great thanks:lala:

I hope you haven't started yet.
Why you want to take the effort to swap in an engine that is only two years younger, is beyond me.
Total waste of money, this mission.
Sad, but truth
My engines were 1995 issued and had 44K & 50K miles on them. That was worth the effort & money.
1985 is a stand alone emission/vacumm hose design.

Shame, for the year & value of the parts you've said, the other car owner should have paid you to remove the vehicle.

Someone else here once did a swap like this painted the engine too.
The engine lasted about 2-3 weeks before it threw a rod.
Lots of money & spray paint wasted.

I've gotta agree with Karl on this one, the 3.4 motors are much stronger and more powerful and will bolt right in.

I don't want to be a meanie, but
I just reread one line from original thread

And i really need that car on the road cause i got no means other transportation.

I suggest you do find a more reliable method of transportation, too.

Knowing CT. (Grandparents lived in Westport), I believe there is adequate public transportation, cause you won't be back on road in a week or two.

Sell your project for a good running reliable car.
Apply that $250 to the other car you purchase

You'll have time for engine swapping missions in the future, one day.

Decent price for cheap transportation, but quickly find a 350 and start building for that other ride. I know my 400 bux car didnt last w/o breaking. If the car last you the summer with no problems, you lucked out.

For kicks...

Differences between 85 & 87 2.8's!

1985
-------
1. accessories driven by v-belts
2. externally balanced on flywheel
3. two piece rear seal

1987
-------
1. accessories driven by serpentine belt
2. internally balanced on crankshaft counterweight
3. one piece rear seal
4. Might use torx bolts for water pump

That's all!

as of six o'clock this evening the original plan has been reinstated . A bartender at my job has offered me a FREE honda accord with nothing wrong just needs to be registered . So with this in mind i can still hold on to my camaro and have that on the road by the middle of summer with a 350 in it. THANK YOU ***
