Yep; VSS should be poking out of the back of the speedometer head. Look for a yellow box. Can't help with more right now; I'll try to get my manual out and look for you over the weekend.

Thanks tom, guess dude was right. I thought they started in 90

Haynes and Chiltons dont show them on wiring diagrams

Yes, headliner will get re-re-done, since everyoen wants like 100+ or one. Geesh

I also have that yellow box on my 1985 speedo head.
I UNDSERSTAND it works with the TC lock up feature.
My TC locks at 35MPH & also at 45MPH.

I'm redoing my headliner for about $30-40!
Found supplier local.
Material at $6.99/yard.
AND it's light tan/doeskin/buckskin colored!
Actually any color can be had from this place!
AND the glue spray is $10 a can

VSS's in the tailshaft were standard for later-year f-bodies. '86 Firebirds with idiot light dash panels got the VSS and VSS buffer integrated into a single yellow box connected to the back of the speedo. '86 Firebirds with digital gauges got the VSS in the tailshaft of the trans, and a separate VSS buffer by the ECM (also a yellow box). Not sure about '86 Camaros.

Looked it up in the GM book; the VSS takes a +12 supply from the gauges fuse on a pink/black wire. It's grounded via a black/white wire. The signal goes to the ECM via a brown wire.

Dale: Would you mind taking a pic of your 2.8 for me? I'm still trying to make heads or tail of my engine's date of manufacture... Thanks!

I thought the VSS came up in '89/90 along with VATS?

My '88 2.8/T5 is a straight cable speedo, with the nice little gear in the tranny tailshaft.

Camaros evolved later than Firebirds, but all the cars had a VSS. Go look at the back of your speedometer, Doward... you'll see a yellow box. There were two types, like I said... those in the tailshaft (later years), and those in the back of the speedometer. Speedometer ones were optical, tailshaft ones were magnetic. You just have to lift off your dashpad to see it.. you don't have to go yanking out the whole cluster.

My '86 also has a straight cable speedo, with a regular gear in the trans tailshaft, a yellow VSS sensor/buffer behind the speedo (driven by the speedometer), and a brown wire going to the ECM.

Tom, you're saying I can easily access the behind the instrument cluster stuff, by simply removing the dash pad?

My VSS set up is identical to yours.

When/IF ya decide to lube speedo cable, USE WHITE GREASE
Axle grease wears down quick, as I am discovering, drat!
