Carb 2.8s

Do the carb 2.8s have computers? I called the local junk yard looking for a 3.1 but found a decent 82 2.8 for a good deal $250 I need something for my RS! How hard would this swap be?

they do have a computer but it does not control as much as the later models. The early 2.8's had electronic carb and without the computer it will run rich.

do u plan on keeping it carbed or going for fuel injection?

Are you saying you have no engine right now?

Do you have a harness? Computer?

If you have nothing, right now, I'd either -

****** a 3.1 setup from a boneyard (or the 3.1 setup with a 3.4 under it) OR

Drop a carb'd 350 in there

Best bet will be a carb'd motor/tranny.

What do you want to do with it, eventually? Always work toward you final goals!

Took me awhile to find this old thread https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=156773 What would be the best swap for me? I like the carb 2.8 concept but I want something simple.

Lots of decent rides for the cost a few coins in San Francisco area!
PS & I'LL BET RUST FREE, TOO!
Try that trick back in other parts of this great American Country of ours

WELL NOW THAT'S DIFFERENT
Let's go.
Find a 3.4 Mill
Install it.
DO NOT change the induction/ignition system,
Await the headers from Pacesetter.
Enjoy.
DO IT RIGHT!
My 1995 3.4 in the 1985 Firebird using the original induction/ignition/exhaust system.
PS rebuild tranny for needed strength.
Don't waste ya time anyother way IF this car means so much.
Running fast time frame?
I guess, it's your time frame.
I did my 3.4 swap in about a month of very hard work.

I have no time frame no tranny to rebuild and no leftover parts if I do swap to a 3.4 I would have to get all the FI stuff.

SO MANY CHOICES
This all depends on how deep is yur wallet & skills.
WHAT I WOULD SAY THO IS
find a donor car to strip stuff from & then junk or sell carcass.
IF ya really want this ride of yours to live, you have LOTS of work ahead.
My car is CA smog legal,
One CA Smog test reading I pushed out zero emissoins!
I went very very fast on freeway other day.
My AC works ice cold.
My Wife drives my almost 3 yr old in this car, daily.
I really enjoy this new engine great chassis ride I've made.
You have alot of work ahead.
NOTHNG WILL BE EASY OR CHEAP
which is why I said I'll be mean.
No matter what direction you'll go with this project, you have so much work ahead.
Plan and keep planning before you commit any money.
It is very difficult to convert this V6 MPFI car, properly, to V8 power.
BUT it can be done, too.

What to do, what to do... I'll call the JY later I do know their motors come with trannys, wires, gas tank, fuel lines etc. see if they got a decent 3.4 I'm not worried about the work/time just the $ (I want to get turboed!).

You got a pic of your engine bay? It would make my life so easier if it doesn't have comps.

The computer "senses" the Air/Fuel ratio & "keeps" it constant.
The below is the smog sticker for that F body combo.
My 1985 S-10 Blazer FEDERAL 49 state version, is just a carb & distributor, no computer. Can't have a non computer carb with a computer distributor.
MUST be matched set to operate.

Karl, what if I use the wires, comps, FI and everything off a 4th gen 3.4 along with the motor? Could that work? I found a 3.4 with everything for $700 including the tranny!

RIGHT ON!!
BRING THAT CAR HOME & JUST START SWAPPING AWAY!
Take the BESTt of both cars, in the end, realizing you are creating a hybred custom swap.
I CAN BE DONE
BUT TO START AT $700 FOR YOUR 3.4 power! DAMN FIND A WAY!!
IT'S LOTS OF NEW TRAILS YOU'll BE BLAZING!
Grab the late model rear axle (sway bar, shocks) stuff & FI gas tank & hard line fuel lines from tank to engine bay along with, power steering pump, AC Compressor & alternator, along with the "Y" pipe.

EASY FACTOR?
The swap, for me, would be as difficult as a TPI V8.
BUT
Here's best part, all this V6 stuff interchanges/swaps/fits like a glove.
ALOT of rewiring.
Seek out Dale for help creating the harness.
He did that for his late 90's S-10 powered SFI 3.4!
YA GOTTA REALLY LOVE THE CAR FOR THIS OPERATION
NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART!
GREAT SCORE
Bring other 3.4 powered car & just start swapping stuff & use all the new stuff ya can, then deposit the old stuff back at the yard!
Don't forget to grab interior while at it!
GREAT SCORE LOTS OF PERSONAL CUSTOM EASY SWAPPING MUCHO DETAILED WORK!
ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE
DON'T EXPECT THIS IN ONE WEEKEND! LOLOL!!

SIMPLE.
Only need rebuild your original 700R4 tranny & get it beefed up slightly!
That is EXACTLY what I did to mine.
Works perfect
OR convert & have a royal blast!!
PS the Street Legal PACESETTER headers are one step closer.
You can be creating ONE SWEET RIDE, LOTS OF POWER in a very light weight chassis.
INSTANT CANYON CARVING FUN FACTOR POSSIBILITY!
How I know, that's exactly what my 1985 Firebird is!
3.4 power, Trans Am suspension, lightweight chassis, auto. Street Legal PACESETTER HEADERS SOON!
THIS 3.4 powered Firebird is a BLAST to drive in LA traffic!
I'd love to drive this car on Route 17 to Half Moon Bay or the PCH above Marin.
With a little witchcraft, you could do that.
Again LOTS of work but worth it!

Bitchin! Is that an original dual snorkel air cleaner, or one you made up? You said that '85 is originally carb'd? Is it a Canada car?

The 82-84 2.8's had the small journal cranks... only #3 was "large". In 85-up 2.8's, all journals were sized the same. 87-up 2.8's became internally balanced due to the addition of an internal crank counterweight (used for DIS ignition on front wheel drive 2.8's). So if you're concerned about crankshaft strength go for an 85-up, but I'd recommend an '87-up because then you don't have to worry about un-balancing the crank due to changing the flywheel.

Karl I have no tranny to rebuild me and my bro dumped it! It took oh about 5k to get out the drive way that's one of the reasons why my motor blew.

Sounds like several visits to a wrecking yard is in order.
You can "pretty much" mix & match lots of stuff for the 3rd Gen F body.
Once you determine a "PLAN" and make it solid (a 3.4 mill & lots of other parts for $700 is a great place to start), check all answers/details ya can think of.
Then get wrenching.
