No cat-back bad?

My catback on my 3.1 is falling off at the moment, one of the clamps went bye-bye. Now, of course I could go fix it, but I might use this as an excuse to do something to the car. I'd like to get a different catback, maybe a different muffler, but what about taking off the catback entirely? The car still has the cat, so it wouldn't be insanely loud, and I'm sure it would lose some tq down low. I guess what I want to know is will this hurt more than benefit?

No cat
No air pump
PVC fresh air filter [not putting that junk in my intake]

No Problems.

Oh, it'll be loud enough to the cops! Don't forget now the exhaust will be exiting under your window, too, so it'll seem even louder to you as you drive. It's also bad because that carbon monoxide will seep into the passenger area of your car- so if you get drowsy on a long drive, pull over, get out, and get some fresh air!!!

Look up WLK-17493 on http://www.summitracing.com for a cat-back that's a direct bolt-in at a great price with great sound. I got another compliment on mine a week ago- the guy was surprised that I had a v6. I haven't heard that in years!

TomP, do you happen to have any pics of what that catback looks like installed on the car? I've been looking into getting a new catback setup, and that one seems pretty nice.

Anyone have a recording of it on a V6?

Thanks!

Hey Tom, any kind of performance gains on the exhaust? Or atleast anything noticiable?

Tom....I'm running no cats and mufflers dumped right between the driver and passenger seats without turndowns. It stinks but it's never been bad enough to have any kind of effect on me...and it's on a V8 no less...
By the way...I can't imagine running open-cat on one of these V6's would sound good in any way...but you never know!

Yep, I took some recordings a while ago, hear them here: http://www.geocities.com/tomp_3rdgen/exhaustclips.html

The page errors aren't mine, by the way. I'm a better programmer then that. I should try some new recordings; supposedly it was because I recorded those in Mono 8Hz that all the background static bursts came out.

And yep I noticed a performance gain with my exhaust. It was a nice surprise, because I didn't really expect to. I figured on a 1 or 2 HP gain.

v6's sound decent at idle without pipes after the cat, i know from expierience, just dont go gunning it high RPM's sound bad!! but now i got my hiflo cat, flowmaster and tips outa the back and it sounds better

perhaps a v8 would sound ALOT better

i happened to cut my cat-back exhaust off, and then put in a universal performance cat. converter....

it turned out great because the noise is no louder than a performance exhaust and it sounds great!

and there is no fumes or smell in the cabin at all...

and in my area, as long as you have a cat. converter, then your fine...

so i am all for cutting out the exhaust!
