Emergency Repairs, Timing Chain

Going to change the oil, I realize my engine is 2 qts low on oil

So why is this :scratch head: , so I start looking around, notice the whole front of my engine is soaked with oil, and leaking antifreeze from around the timing chain cover.

Ok, so time to replace the cover gasket, and check the chain since the cars speedo broke at 186,967 miles, and that was ATLEAST 1.5 months ago. I'm already halfway their.

I get to the chain, realize the guide is broken from the chain smacking it, it also has been smacking the timing cover. I almost got the chain off w/o removing any gears from the engine.

So never less, new timing chain, new gaskets, oil change, 6 hours later, for this simple oil change, it runs sooooooooooo much better.

Attached is a picture of the chain.

Cover was just starting to get rubbed, so it fine. Its still on the car.

Sold the truck almost a month ago But my outstanding bills are payed up, and working on paying the maxed out credit cards down.

Only problem with this is it was un-expected, and a 13 yo gasket that didnt want to come off

GTP is getting treated fine, it has all repairs fixed that were broke when I got it, plus new tunes, some engine goodies, and a top notch intake on the way. Wanna race project85?

I had to use stock replacement?

Braket race? What kind is that? I'm thinking of attending the 1000ft track this coming weekend with it. Got prices and a group to go with. Should have my intake in then. Now I gotta learn how to take off with it w/o spinning. TCS doesnt handle it all that well, still spins.

3 pc set or just the chain?

You race w/TCS on? I staged once w/it on & thought I stalled

3 piece set, still made by cloyes.

I've never raced anything, so I should leave TCS off? That car will do nothing but spin with it off.

What was the part number & price for the set? Where's you get it from also.

GTPs shouldn't be stomped off the line, too much spin. wait until your going a little then stomp it so you wont over torque the wheels. p.s. Who needs posi when the engine sits over the wheels

It is a really good idea to change the timing chain if your car is getting up there in the miles (100k+) and has never had one. That's one thing that makes an engine run like crap (lack of power, rough idle). Eventually, if you keep ignoring, it will leave you stranded.
My old lg4 died while making a turn one day as a result of me putting mine off (using the , 'eh, it still runs' theory).
The result of neglect (though it would still turn over and barely run for a few seconds)...

Just as bad.. the chain had enough slack that it had been riding atop the the cam gear sprockets until a few of them sheared off causing the death problem...

Hehehe mine was worse. you could all most touch both sides of the chain together. Of course the guide plate was gone. I'm asuming it is some ware in the oil pan. Or the last person who worked on it left it off. Chain was slaping so bad it left a bunch of hair line cracks in the timing cover.

Yes do it. I laugh about mine, but that only becuase it didn't destory the enigne. i would kicking my self in the butt if I did real damage. You wont belive the amount of power that is returned once this is done. Also a smother idle. It's like a "poor man's engine rebuild".

bracket racing is a type of drag racing... its pretty neat.

what you do is set a time... like say 15.5

you want to get as close to 15.5 as you can, without going faster.

so lets say you dialed in a 15.5 and your opponent dials in a 16.0

his light would turn green a half second before yours... if you both had the same reaction time, and you both ran exactly your dial ins, you would cross at the same time.....

it makes it more about being consistant, and getting a good reaction time on the light then it is about having a fast car...

its also about the only way a 16 second L03 vert can beat a low 11 second sprayed LS1...

oh....what i orignally was going to post:

yea, me and my uncle had to replace a timing chain in a SBC in the parking lot of a autozone in the middle of nowhere..... we managed to do it without pulling the pan or foobaring the seals..... worked great.... was suppost to be temp until we got home, but somehow, it didnt leak and he ran that motor another 5 or 6 thousand before somthing happened to the bottom end, or he swapped it or somthing.. not sure, i wasnt there...

but it was fun.
