tire sizes?? wut fits???
hey i got some new rims made by cragar
on the rear i need a 285/70/15 or something like that..
will that fit or will it be too tall and rub when i hit bumps or will it be too wide also?. (which i doubt its too wide but who knows lol )
im seriously worried if it will be too tall.. it says it will fit a 15x 8" rim.. .and the rim has 3 3/4" back spacing.. the stock rims on the rear i have now are 4" back spacing with 255/60/15s on them..
please help me lol

This page is real handy.
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
You can compare tires from the side or end view. See how the different sizes grow and get wider.
Not really the answer you want but you can see how much taller or wider that tire is to what you have. Then see if you got enough room.

Honestly i cringe when I see some guy with monster tires on a thirdgen. Unless they are for serious drag racing it really screws with the center of gravity and how the car handles. Everyone wants some nice meaty tires but I tend to run equal size tires and keeping the ride even.
The jacked up air shock looks is just for looks on the street, I wouldn't be hanging it all out in corners with it. Our cars handle so well and unless you just plan on only going fast straight, Id keep the tire size within reason.

Mine is a two part.
I'm looking for "larger" front size.
I am seeking a comment on 235-60-15 up front.
Downer on that size may be too low a front with a 60 series tire.
On the jacked up rear.....
after seeing it first hand, and "living it" (my Brother installed Gabriel Air Shock on our Families 1966 Mustang & installed wider rear tires-not extreme)
The look is "right" within REASON, on a classic 60's/70's vehicle body style lines.
Into the 80's the "style" was fat within body lines.
Into the 90's it was DEEP back spacing with a wide tire.
Choose your weapon, but a 15x8 is fine sized wheel but keep tire within body lines. Jacking up rear of a 3rd F Body, well.....
I ran a 245-60-15 in rear & was fine. I think a 245-60-15 would be "too" wide in front, tho.

well my air shocks are great cuz if i get tires slighty too tall i could just raise the rear end up , .. but still.. im debating with myself whether to go with 275 60 or 285 70..
any ideas ppl?
------------- i do know that the 285 70 will give me less revs per mile and may help out my gas mileage, cuz its taller..but im also lookin for width.. i wonder if its gonna be wide enuf... thats if it fits up under there..

I still miss my air shocks... but after 9 years with them and large rear tires, it was time for "change".
Largest rear tire I ran was a P275/60r15 on a 15x8 rim. The tire before that was a tall P255/70r15 on the same rim. Now I'm back at P245/60r15 rear (15x8) and P225/60r15 front (15x7 rim). But I have two things that weren't mentioned yet that you might want to consider...
#1, Weight! Don't forget the extra pounds that big rims and tires will put on your car, which will slow the car down. Your gas mileage might stay the same because of the weight, too.
#2, rolling resistance! Your car will also go slower because of the increased surface contact with the road; the wider/taller tire will be generating extra friction.
To fit the P255/70r15's in the back, I had to massage the driver's side inner rear wheelhousing with a sledgehammer. When I put the P275/60r15's on, they fit in the same spot, I didn't have to break the sledge out again. I never had a problem on the passenger side.
Oh and now that the car's lower, the tires come damn close to the outer wheel well lip... good thing I got the extra-hard gas shocks!

im also getting an up grade from a BFG 215 60 to a 235 60 on the front cuz i cant deal with the annoying understeer and increased stopping distance... those lil tires just dont seem to handle increased weight .. oh well....
heres a random pic i took a while ago while i sit and wait for more responses
