GOt my head off today

I went out and bought a tq wrench and some pb blaster.:hail: pb blaster! That stuff works great! After trying to reach the y pipe bolts for a half hour i started taking out the exhaust manifold bolts. After some pb they cam out pretty easy, all except for the one i broke before. After i got the exhaust manifold off the head i took the head off. The number one cyl was like 1/4 full of oil and coolant mixed. When i lifted the head off the block the head gasket was in like three pieces. Every cyl is dry and clean execpt for the number one cyl, i think this is the place the head gasket went bad this is also the area where the head gasket was all messed up. I think someone replaced my lifters, i mean if they were from 85 dont you think they'd be a little worn? I took one out and wiped it off, it looked like chrome after i got the oil off. And Very flat not worn at all. Also some of my exhaust manifold bolts are different sizes then others. And when i got down to the pistons the little bit of carbon they had on them wiped off with a paper towel.Maybe someone rebuilt this motor? If they did i dont think they used a tq wrench because every bolt i took out (except the broken ex bolt) was pretty easy to loosen.Even the head bolts seemed to be more like 20 lbs to break loose, no place near the 70 or so they call for. So as soon as i get a day with ok weather im starting to bolt it all back together. I was thinking, the sensor in the back of the passinger side head is for the fan correct? Couldnt i put my coolant temp sensor in their instead? My fan is totally independent, it has its own senor and all. Thanks again to all the people on here who helped me with this. wasnt nearly as hard as it seemed.:lala: :hail:

THe sensor in back of the head: If the coolant temp sensor will fit, go for it.

I also highly reccomend an engine oil flush once the engine is back together, just incase the coolant got elswhere in the engine it shouldn't have.

thanks for the advice , im off tomorrow for a case of oil and the gaskets to put it all back together. Im thinking of 3 oil changes, two with cheap dollar store like oil just to get all the crap out, and the third ill keep mobile one in their. I have three differnt adapters for my temp gauge sender so im sure one of them will fit.

I just cleaned th ehead up some, after using a can of tb cleaner with not much improvment i bought $2 in gas. Put the head in an old fish tank with some gas and wiped and dumped gas over it. Looks much better now. No grease or oil any place.

I was safe, i did it on the stove with the windows open, Just kidding. I was using carb cleaner, tb cleaner, break parts cleaner, all worked really slow or dried way too fast. The head has oil all over from my gasket less valve covers.

Don't forget to get New head bolts! You can't use the old ones. Follow the torque spec closely...

yeah im probably going to go get them today. The torque pf the head bolts when they came out was no place near what it was supposed to be. Maybe thats why the gasket went?

Don't loose your head now that its off

Make sure its clean as can be, and no gouges on the surface.

haha funny, I soaked the head in gas, it got all the grease off, then i used my dremel with the thin paper like sanding discs and got all the old gasket off. Its real smooth now, no gouges, high or low points. I just went to r&s and got the head gasket and all the other crap ill need. The intake gaskets came with all the plenum gaskets too so thats cool. So price for the head gasket replacement diy was $60 for the gaskets, oil, and filter.plus $30 for tools. I still want to put a new water pump on but thats a 15 minute job, right now i want to get the motor back together.

I just thought of this, when i removed my intake manifold it didnt have any coolant in it ,not a drop, and it wasnt torqued down at all, i mean i loosen the bolts with one hand. Now i know the head gasket was leaking from the coolant all over the side of the engine bay but maybe the intake not being tqed down made the coolant leak into the oil?

no rust, found out that my intake gasket must have went , i know the head gasket was bad because oof the coolant all over the engine bay on the side of the motor. But today i got my dremel out to clean up the part of the head that the intake meets and as the dremel broke down the gunk left there i smelled the unmistakable smell if antifreeze, the stuff was under the gasket and went all the way to the top past the gasket and to the bottom beyond the gasket. I thought about the intake leaking after i cleaned the head because all of the head was clean except for this area. And i know that when you put a intake manifold on and torque down the intake it compresses the gasket but my manifold wasnt torqued down and when i removed it the gasket was thin like tin foil. Cheap bastards, used no torque wrench and cheap gaskets, they didnt even use any valve cover gaskets at all.

the block is fine, the drivers side head gasket was new, i think the prev owner did a head gasket job on the wrong head and then threw it back together with the old gaskets, this would explain the flat intake gaskets and no valve cover gaskets at all. Then put the car up for sale real quick. Im just very glad it happend when i was basicaly down the street from my house. Like as the steam started coming out of the exhaust i was already parked and shut the motor off. I knew it was coolant in the oil as soon as i saw the exhaust so i didnt even try to start it after that and it's been unstarted ever since.
The coolant passages in the block still have bright green antifreeze in them also. Ill drain the block before i put everything back together. I didnt do it yet because its like 20 here in Philly and im not starting the put together untill its at least above freezing.
