GACK! No no no! There are differences!
Speed Density vs. Mass Airflow: The 2.8 ECU can compensate readily for the 3.4 with its stock injectors since it directly measures airflow, the 3.1 would be CLUELESS. Lean, lean, and more lean. Using the 3.4 injectors would be a straight *requirement* or you'll burn the motor. In contrast, using 3.4 injectors in the 2.8 swap without rechipping for the injectors is rather silly and will run pig rich in open loop, and BLMs would be insanely low in closed loop
Water pump swap becomes a moot point, all 3.1s used CCW rotating serpentine setup anyway.
Flywheel is moot point. Both are neutral balanced.
Basically, to do the swap correctly, all you need is the 3.4 long block and injectors.
As far as the tranny goes, they use the same transmissions as thirdgens. T5 or 700R4/4L60. Your problem is the 700R4/4L60 refusing to do 3->4 shifts at more than 2/3 throttle. They all do that. If you're looking for shift speed, this is a silly point, since with the T5, now you're letting off the gas for ALL shifts instead of just one. Granted, the T5 is fun to drive.. it's also a big can of worms concerning the swap.

so all i need is the 3.4 injectors, it sounds like your tellling me to just pull the 3.1 out and drop the 3.4 in since the injectors r already intacked

Hold on!
Just a minute Techsmurf, I was told that going 2.8 to 3.4 you had to use the 3.4 injectors?!? The Mass air is going to measure a higher volume of air coming in, the injector pulse witll be lengthened, but I always thought the 16Lb 2.8 injectors couldn't flow enough to support the amount of air coming in (which makes it lean). With the 3.4 injectors, the pulse will be self corrected through the input of the Maf, O2 readings, Tps. Remember, the computer trys to make the car run at the right A/F ratio......

yes, but the 3.1 isn't a MAF engine, that's what TechSmurf is getting at. I never had a problem running lean.

krazy, its basically the same. Only thing you wont have to worry about is the plug thats required to be removed from the head for the fan sensor. Thats it.
I belive the tranny is still "called" a t5. I'm not 100% sure it will work in our cars, I didnt study that in my searchings.

Yes, the 4th gens had T-5 for the 5speeds, & T-56 for the 6 speeds.

Take your 3pieces of the intake, swap over.
Move your timing chain cover over. Inspect/replace chain while here.
Swap your distrib over.
pull the 17lb injectors from the 3.4, and plug them into your 3.1 rail with new o-rings.
project85 says oil pan will clear, but for complete stealth mission, swap it too.
Two sensors, one in top front of engine, cam sensor, leave it in to plug the hole. One on pass side block, down low. Leave it in.
Pass side engine, remove knock sensor, swap to other location down by starter. Take plug from other location and put in orginal knock sensor location.
