Timing?
Timing?
Ive got an 87 Camaro, 2.8L V6 EFI, in the garage. Some ******* moved all the plug wires on space off on the distrubotor, and then timed it poorly that way. They also managed to paint over the plate or sticker or whatever is supposedly stuck to the front fender to tell me what the timing is supposed to be, so I cant time the damned thing with the wires in the proper position. I dont suppose any of you can enlighten me?

From: Palm Bay, Florida, USA

Axle/Gears: A weak one & a chained one
Before. 10 degrees is stock. 12-13 might require stepping up the octane a little, but probably not. Depends on the car.
But it sounds like you can't see your timing indicator to time it properly...so do what the old school muscle car guys do, if you can manage it....might need a spare set of hands. Loosen the distributor hold-downs, hold the distributor in place (careful to keep your hands away from the plugwires/terminals...you can get zapped that way). Slowly advance the timing until it starts to ping...then back it off a little bit. That'll set it at about the maximum you can go before pinging. Although to really give it a final check you'll need to listen to the engine under load...it will usually ping the most if you're on the interstate and go wide open throttle in 3rd gear.

What happend was the car was firing on 4 cylinders, and one of the plug wires was laying up against the manifold (Its my buddies car, and the guy he got it from was a dumb****), and I dont know what was wrong with the other one. I put in new plugs, wires and a distributor cap, and I foudn that the moron put the wires in the wrong spot, and then played with the timing til it ran. So I'm just going to adjust it back, but I couldnt find out how much to time it with the wires in the right damn position.

#1 wire goes to the point on the passanger side front forward-most.
imagine clock from firewall forward.
12 is firewall, 6 the intake.
#1 would be the 6 1/2 position.
and the wire goes to the front passanger plug on engine.

Yeah, they were in the right firing order, just one point too far clockwise.
