Help new to F body(weird idle) maybe alt?

Hello,

First I just got my car less than a week ago its a 89 Firebird with the Trans am kit looks. It has 75,000 miles(got it from a vet) The car seems to run great but... I have a weird issue with it. here is what it does (Automatic also)

(1) Car has a weird idle and will move up and down a little bit more than my 2.8 Fiero's always did.

(2) sometimes at stop lights it surges, which makes it try to take off.

(3) Today when stopped at a red light it just went dead(no weird idle or anything just went dead)

(4) It does the freaky idle in par as well as in gear (car run's like a champ however)

(5) think this might be my issue here... (when the headlights are on they flicker a lot and all like that, my volt gauge is reading around 14 when I am not running anything. At night with the lights on,heater,Radio and teh car in gear it will sometimes drop below the half way mark(not very far tho) So is my Alt. going south for whats left of the winter? I am thinking this might be the issue.....

(6) my car seem's to be hesitating just a very small bit on take off's as well. Not real bad just to the starting point you will notice it.

(7) Heater Core while I am here has started to go as well(how hard is it to replace?) its under the hood right(Fiero was under the passanger side dash)

Anyway I totaly LOVE this car its so sweet and in great shape, I wouldnt have ever bought one untill I seen this one! However it does have the plastic T-Tops(ughh) and when you take the covers off you can see they are craked looking hate that!

This is an Awesome place everyone good job! Look forward to being a active member

14 is about normal alternator output. 12 is bare minimum to break even and not drain the battery.

As for the idle....ahh, could be so many things. Check your IAC valve. Check for vacuum leaks too. Does it go up and down, or is it actually missing?

She will idle down then back up again and down and so fourth a lot.

I wouldnt say she's missing at all. she does have the sluggish take off a bit(think thats calling for new plugs)

Thanks tho I will check the Iac tomm morning and see what i can tell on it.

Yeah that's definitely a surge. Check IAC and vacuum.

hey, sorry this has nothing to do with the idle problem but, did anyone else notice that dhays is in Tucson AZ?? if ked can't go to pacesetter, maybe our newest member would be interested!?!? also, i see that you have 3.5 L engine listed, what's that?

edit: oops, i see know that the 3.5 is in another car, my bad. is the "trans am look"ing car a v6 or a v8?

As previously noted by Ked, pacesetter has a car in phoenix now.. the header thing is covered.. so no worries there.. for now.

DHays, If this idle thing doesn't get resolved by the 20th, I'd be willing to come have a look at it and bs about thirdgens for a while.. mom's going in for surgery, so I'll be in tucson for a few days.. I'd probably enjoy something to take my mind off it for a while, probably the 22nd or 23rd.

Man it's nice to hear from another Tucsonan! If you and Techsmurf figure out what's wrong, let me know because my car has been doing that idle crap since I got it 3 years ago.The last thing I can thinnk of would be the IAC.
Maybe all us 6'ers in the Tucson, sierra vista area should get together or something. Eric
